generally, it means any sin of the flesh, which invariably comes back to sex. It is not just sex without marriage, but that is the most common use of the word. There used to be an actual charge of "fornication" found in some criminal codes. It is both a Biblical and a Cannon Law term. It is not adultery. Adultery is sex outside of a legally valid marriage. In an adulterous situation, where one party is married and the other is not, the married person would be guilty of adultry and the unmarried party would be guilty of fornication under the Bible. If you take the very same situation and apply it to the modern law, the married person is guilty civally for adultery, and both parties are guilty criminally for the crime of "criminal conversation." "Crim Con" is now either abolished or never enforced in states where it is still on the books.

Typically, sexual intimacy between two unmarried people.
Sexual intercourse between partners who are not married to each other.
WORD HISTORY The word fornication had a lowly beginning suitable to what has long been the low moral status of the act to which it refers. The Latin word fornix, from which fornicātiō, the ancestor of fornication, is derived, meant “a vault, an arch.” The term also referred to a vaulted cellar or similar place where prostitutes plied their trade. This sense of fornix in Late Latin yielded the verb fornicārī, “to commit fornication,” from which is derived fornicātiō, “whoredom, fornication.” Our word is first recorded in Middle English about 1303.

In short it is: Illicit sex relations outside of Scriptural marriage.
The long answer is:
The Greek word translated “fornication” is not restricted to sexual intercourse but includes a variety of lewd acts. So if two unmarried people engage in oral sex or in fondling each others’ reproductive organs, they are guilty of fornication.
The Bible exhorts Christians to flee not only from fornication itself but also from all forms of unclean conduct that could lead to it.# (Colossians 3:5)
The Greek word translated “fornication” is por·nei′a. Porneia is understood to involve the grossly immoral use of the genital organ(s) of at least one human; also there must have been two or more parties (including another consenting human or a beast), whether of the same sex or the opposite sex. (Jude 7)

sex out side of a legal marriage bed is clear fornication...
and if you are married sex with some one that is not your husband or wife is clear fornication.
a man can not marry a man in the eyes of GOD this is clear fornication along with being an abomination
a woman can not marry a woman in the eyes of GOD this is clear fornication along with being an abomination
as you can see man is making up his own thing. the ones that are in legal office are allowing this type of marriage into human law will have to answer for this with GOD even more than the confused ones that are actually believing that they can marry their same sex.
worshiping craved images as a god is fornication in the eyes of the true living GOD Jehovah. if you would like to look into this a little more here is my e mail evelyn52murray@yahoo.com would be more than happy to help you locate the scriptures to back this up.
bible research is fun! and very exciting! not to mention the fact that bible study can bring your understanding closer to GOD and his son Jesus Christ. according to the bible you keeping asking and you shall receive.. I pray that more people ask as you are asking this is the first step in the way to knowledge of our creator and GOD Jehovah

The Oxford dictionary defines Fornication as 'voluntary sexual intercourse between an unmarried couple.' Notice the difference between fornication and adultery. Adultery is 'the act of being unfaithful to one's wife or husband by voluntarily having sexual intercourse with someone else,' whereas Fornication is 'sexual intercourse between an unmarried couple.'

Adultry requires a marriage.
Fornication requires sexual relations without marriage. One that commits adultry is commiting adultry as well as fornicationg. One that is not married is only committing fornication.
