I have been taking metformin as prescribed by my doctor for the past 4 weeks now (for PCOS and insulin resistance) and have past through all the side affects except one. I am now craving sugar all the time, I am hating it cause I have never in my life eaten as much sugar in this past week as I have in my whole life! In just the past week alone I have eaten either a candy bar or some other form of sugar everyday...I am really hating this! I was always so good about not having any of these types of cravings (the only reason I became insulin resistant and gained weight is because I would only eat once a day at dinner time since I was a teenager). And because I don't like to eat in the morning or at lunch time, I drink slim-fast meal replacement shakes as a supplement as well as exercise with Yoga, do high impact dancing and my job keeps me very active as well. I notice that even these are not working to help me lose the weight. What should I do to stop the cravings and lose more weight?

Thank you all for your responses, they are very helpful. My husband is really good about supporting my new lifestyle changes and since the diagnosis, have stopped eating out, buy only whole wheat foods no white breads or potatoes or white rice (although we have substituted brown rice into our diets now). Also, no sugars such as sodas (with the exception of last weeks ordeal).

I've been on metformin for years and it's not made me crave sugar....diabetes does that for me! You need to talk to your doctor and a good nutritionist. Metformin also comes w/other meds combined into one pill. Januvia is one of these that is now combined w/metformin. It won't cause the weight gain. Avoid Actos....will cause weight gain. 5 or 6 small meals and cutting out "white" carbs (processed foods, white sugar, flour, rice) and eating more whole grains helps. Yoga is a wonderful thing to do. Slimfast is probably not the best thing to be having, which is why you need to talk to a professional. Good luck and don't let this get you down.

I crave sugar all the time too and I take metformin as well as a lot of other meds. But then I have always wanted sugar. I figured out that when I really want something sweet, I am actually thirsty. Diabetes and thirst come together. Take a big drink of cold water and it will help fight off the cravings. Try it before you say no. . .
About your diet, you need to go to a nutricianist and a good one. You can't eat all carbs and need to eat balanced meals. Instead of three meals try five small ones. It will help balance out your sugar/insulin level. The spiking will damage your body and regardless of what you like, you have to do whatever you can to prolong and fight off the oncoming problems that diabetes brings. Take your diabetes very seriously because once you progress to another level of the disease, you can't go back. Learn what you need to know to eat and control your disease so that you live a long healthy life. If you don't, you shorten your life and will regret not taking care of yourself. It's not what you want anymore but what diabetes demands that you do that is important.

I too crave sugar and way more than ever before. I find myself eating something sweet at least once a day where before I would go days without sweets. It's very frustrating and in spite of what some people want to tell you, they don't go away by waiting 20 minutes. Mine only become more intense. I need help, but no one seems to have the answer.

With the newer types of insulin these days, diabetic diets aren't necessarily as restrictive as they used to be. Read here https://tr.im/5DNNl
As with any medicine or diet change, you should discuss it with your doctor. Fruits, both fresh and dried, have a natural sugar in them that will raise blood sugar levels, so be careful about eating too much. Not sure about the nuts. Moderation is always the key. I've been diabetic for 18 years and just recently changed insulin types. I love it because it gives me more freedom in when and what I eat.

hey, i been on metformin for 5 years. you need smaller meals 4-5 of them a day. take the pills eat something.
try sugar free candy, sugar free soda only, drink 1small glass of juice in the morning.it will help. tomato juice you can drink your fill.
kept the exercise up, as far as weight loss it's real hard when your insulin is not working right!
there is another pill with metformin in it 5 grams of another but they are real expensive

Talk with your doctor. Your body is craving and will continue until you get it into balance Your body will convert your fruits and veggies into sugar. are you eating enough fruits and veggies?? Slimfast are not a safe item to put into your body. a good nutritional product would be Juice Plus+ a whole food supplement made from vine-ripe, produce. http://www.juiceplus.com/nsa/pages/Home.soa?site=Lb53116
