I've used both suckers and various types of shiners for northerns through the ice. My best luck has always been with large (4 to 6 inch) golden shiners, or if these are not available large river shiners/chubs usually are. Personally I've never had much luck with suckers.

Birddog 197 has my vote!

You can't beat a 4-6" Shiner under the ice for Northerns.

As the season progress's, go with smaller Chub minnows and even BIG crappie minnows. Toward the end of the Ice-season, I've had my best luck with smaller baits. Thats "Match-the Hatch" philosophy 101!

Golden shiners always seem to work best for me.I've been useing them now for over 15 years and catch alot more northerns than the folks useing sucker minnows.I think the reason is a shiner minnow FLASHES better
