Put catnip on the post & rub it in. Take the cat over & make the motion of scratching on it with her paws, while saying "scratch the post".
When catching her scratching the furniture, shake a can of rocks or coins to deter her. (She will run)
When you see her scratching the post, say "good girl, scratch the post" & give her a cat treat.

Cats need to scratch naturally, so know that. When you see your kitten scratching something other than his scratching post, pick him up, and bring him over to the scratching post, putting his claws on it. When he does use the post, be sure to reinforce this behavior by petting, saying "good boy", etc. You can also try putting some catnip on the post. Try using those cheap cardboard ones, cats love them, sometimes more than the expensive "rope" ones that I have. good luck, it will happen, you just have to be consistent about this.

First of all, make sure the post is heavy enough or attached to something so the kitten can scratch on it without it moving. There are several kitty-attractants that you can buy at most pet stores and if, by chance, you do see your kitty scratching the post PRAISE TREAT AND PRAISE! Pretty soon little kitty will get the idea.

Take the kitten's paws and rub them on the post, in a scratching motion. When you see him/her scratching anything else, immediately take him to the scratching post. Reward him/her, especially when they go there and scratch on their own.
