I have a Stevens Model 15A .22 caliber single-shot bolt action rifle. How would I find out how much it's worth? I know it's probably not worth a whole lot, because there were about a trillion of them made.

My dad purchased it new in 1955, and he probably fired about 100 rounds with it.

Stevens/Springfield Model 15A 22 caliber Rifle. Shoots .22 Short,.22 Long and 22 Long Rifle Ammunition.Single Shot Bolt Action Rifle Manufactured between 1936-1971

Literally thousands of these rifles were manufactured for sale by Sears & Roebuck,Montgomery Wards,J.C. Penny and Cotter & Company (Also manufactured by Fox Firearms and Savage Arms Company)

In 80% 0r Better Condition It's worth $120 and UP if in 100% Original Condition.....

(also loved MST3K!!!)

It all depends on condition.

Missing or broken parts, deteriorated wood finish, worn metal finish and worst of all RUST will all take off a value significantly.

It used to be that brands like Savage - Stevens were completely ignored by collectors, but that has changed. In the last decade, with Winchester and Colt firearms climbing into the thousands of dollars rather than hundreds, many collectors have started looking at the early 20th century 'working-mans' guns as more interesting. Even the store brands sold by Sears and Western Auto have their followings now.

I find the "blue book" type price guides to be wildly inaccurate as to what a true value is. Oh, they are good for determining the very rare models, but often just use the same values year after year or they just adjust for inflation.

With the internet, searching the auction sites to see what people are actually paying is much more accurate and timely.

Bottom line: If it was well used in its day, that 15A is likely worth less than $100 in complete, working condition.

If it is in exceptionally mint condition, preserved in like new condition, with good photos and marketing you could get a couple hundred, maybe. Only if it's really like new. Original box and paperwork would be very, very rare and a big value booster.

If it works, clean and oil it, buy some .22 ammo and take it out to the range. That's a fine little tin can shooter!

I would go with a Remington 700 in either .308 or .30-06. There performance is so close to each other for deer and hog, that it doesn't matter which you choose. The ammo is typically the same price for identical bullets. The .308 is a short action round, so the rifle might be about 1/2" shorter and 4 oz lighter. If you reload, you can save a couple of cents a round on the .308 since it requires a little less powder.
