excellent question. what i see as the probable cause is we live in a society where food is so abundant and so advertised that it makes it on people's mind all the time. lack of discipline and self control come into play here as well. what's more is that this advertised food is fast food which is HIGH in calories and veeerrry low in nutritional value. also, with technology that does everything for us these days no one really has to move off that couch very much if they don't want to...and of course its way easier to sit on the couch then to get up and go to the gym. and lastly, people are used to seeing overweight people around. 33% of adults are obese and 16% of children and teens are obese (not including the overweight portion which bumps that up to a MUCH MUCH higher figure.) a lot of people who are 50-100lbs overweight don't even know it because it so common among our population now. they just think they're normal or maybe a little on the chubby side. they figure that this is what naturally happens when one gets old thus the larger and larger they get the more they just sit back and accept it because its easier to accept it then to work your butt off to lose weight. there are many more underlying factors here but it is a truly baffling subject to those of us who keep ourselves fit and healthy.

The difference between our country and that of foreign countries is one in which we are rising in our obesity stats primarily due to the fact that we are always in a rush to get things done quickly. In European and South American countries people actually take two to three hours off for lunch called a siesta and work no more than 30 hours a week. Timing is everything as this helps to digest food properly and speed up metabolism (it is also known that these countries have rich diets).
In America we do exactly the opposite which back fires on us and cause us to gain an immense amount of weight. Or we do not have enough time to eat breakfast or lunch and so skip these meals to work 10 to 12 hour days without taking a break in between and thus end up in my situation...overweight, insulin resistant with hormonal imbalances and liver and kidney failure while hardly eating during the day and exercising three to four times a week with little results (mainly due to the fact that my liver is not functioning properly making it extremely difficult to lose any weight at all).
So, before you get judgemental you must first look at all facts surrounding our culture and the demise that eventually follows. Stress is also a huge harbinger of weight gain, and our country is full of it verses that of other nations.

Fat rolls are not attractive. They indicate a lack of muscle and can be corrected by exercise. If your doctor said your son is overweight, very likely he is. Just because you believe being 30 pounds overweight is ok, that doesn't mean it is. Twelve years old is too early to have already started down the road toward poor health. Take control of his diet and yours.

For lots of reasons. Maybe they have clinical depression and can't exercise, eat as a coping technique, etc. Maybe they're recently had an injury or have joint problems and can't work out. Maybe they have a genetic predisposition to obesity and haven't learned how to properly manage their weight. Maybe they are too embarrassed to go to the gym because people like you are there judging them.
Some people, yes, are overweight strictly because of poor lifestyle choices. But you can't tell that just by looking at someone. So maybe we should all just mind our own business about each other's weight.
Assuming every overweight person is "just lazy" is just as bad as assuming every skinny person has an eating disorder.

Two deadly sins come into play here: gluttony and sloth.
It is the combination of both that cause people to gain weight.
People would rather eat palatable foods, which are synonymous with fatty and sugary foods.
Some people are lazy, so they don't exercise. They have "better things" to do than to hit that gym, such as lounge around or play WoW. (However, working out releases endorphins, which often causes a state of euphoria because it is considered a natural pain killer, so if they really want something to be happy about, WORK OUT!!)
Others have no time to work out. Most parents are swamped with work and raising children, so they have very little time to set aside an hour every other day to work out, especially when their day has been exhausting.

most people r not conscious abt it until they become over fat n look ugly.since they r not consious of their figure (when they dont know thats eventually going ugly)they dont mind when their pants getting tight.they restitch it to make the pant useful or else go shopping get larger sizes but they wont get determined and loose weight.its always good to cut down 2,3lbs which they gained in recent past rather than allowing it to grow 20 -30 lbs and then think to shape it up.
people must be consious of their figure and health right from the starting not after they become overweight

unfortunately some people don't care. And as you age the pounds just being to add up and the exercise level goes down. I personally think the real reason are our fast food joints. They are cheep and fast and tasty and absolutely terrible for our health. If you buy a M**** child's meal and put it on a shelf for 3 months you will find that it will not rot and there will be no bugs on it. It will look exactly like it did the day you bought it...except it will be dried out. A food that will not rot will not digest in your body.

Some people use food as a way of dealing with life (the way some people use drugs or alcohol.) When you use food in this way, it doesn't matter what you see in the mirror, you use it to cope.
Also, some people have medical conditions that make them gain weight.
