Either that or snow is the devil's dandruff. Screw snow!

Axial tilt is a heretical theory and all who believe will be thrown into darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

[Earth science is far from my strong suit, lol.]

Um, no.

I thought it was the axial tilt of the Earth.

The Earth's orbit is eccentric, but we are closest to the sun in the Northern Hemisphere's winter.

Also that would also mean that summer an winter would be at the same time in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, where in fact it is the opposite.

Also the eccentricity is processing, so it alters a little year to year. But it will take thousands of years to be significant.

Actually, it's the axial tilt of the earth combined with the solar orbit that is the reason for the season. If there was no tilt, it would be the warmest time of the year all over the earth as the earth is near its perigee.

I saw a programme about the moon last week on the History Channel (UK) . They said that the moon stabalises the Earth's climate; the gravitational effect of the moon keeps the degree of tilt constant ; the tilt is what maintains the repeatable cycle of seasons as the Earth orbits the Sun.

Actually it's the earth's tilt on its axis relative to the orbital plane which causes the Winter Solstice. Perehelion ( the closest approach of the Earth to the Sun ) does not occur till January 3rd.

I thought it was caused by the axis of the earth. The Northern Hemisphere winter we are actually closer to the Sun than in the summer

Yes, I did know that!
And if snow is the Devil's dandruff, why doesn't it come out of the ground instead of from the sky? He's in the underworld, isn't he? I'm so confused...

That's a big part of it. We also have about a 15% tilt and wobble through space. That's why we have Winter in the northern hemisphere while the Southern hemisphere has Summer.

And I was blaming the tilt of the axis in relation to the orbital plane this whole time...

Thanks!!!

The Earth has a wobble as it spins, the axis tilts back and forth.

That's actually how I was going to answer the question (I was going to include something about the tilt of the axis too) and then it got deleted.
