Why not throw out the "bath water", but keep the "baby"?

Yes, but only with Christians. Never with Christ. Christians have often failed or rejected me, but Jesus NEVER has.

For those who don't get the details, there is an old expression, "Do not throw the baby out with the bathwater." It is saying, just because there are people who claim to be Christian dirtying up the water, shouldn't make Jesus a target of rejection.

I'm assuming you're saying we should get rid of all the bad things associated with Christianity (self-righteousness, closed-mindedness, prejudice) and keep all the good things it has been known to engender (benevolence, charity, good will). My question is this: Where do you draw the line between what's the "baby" and what's the "bathwater?" Is the baby the teachings of Jesus Christ and the bathwater The Church? If so, I think you might have a pretty good idea, but good luck trying.

The phrase is "Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater." The "baby" is a thing of value. The "bathwater" has no value and is something to be rid of. The meaning is don't throw out the good with the bad.

God gave us free will and another ones actions should not be a reflection of you or your beliefs!!

God is almighty!!

Because the "bath water" was so bad that my "baby" nearly passed away entirely and I'm not ready to take my chances with fresh "bath water" from the same faucet.

Yes I have, but that's honestly not why I left Christianity. If by "baby" you mean a belief in God, I believe in Goddess and God, so I didn't throw the baby out with the bathwater. My perception of the baby just changed.

I have had a bad experience with people who claim to be Christians but didn't practice what the bible said. It's pretty bad when a preacher preaches every week how to live but doesn't do them things himself. He ended up hurting so many people at that church and half of the people that left don't go to church anymore. I believe in Jesus and love him but I don't belive in people who say one think but do another. That why Christianity has such a bad rep.

uh.... what?

i walked out of a church once and a man stopped out front and yelled at me saying," You must get a life. You belive in god and all he does is make life seem like hell." And then i walked in front of his car to cross the street and he started jammin on his horn.....

um... is that what you wanted?
because if you throw out the bath water the baby gets dirty and will grow up to be a porn star.

The answer is "Yes." But I'm still a Christian because I have my faith in God rather than in those who have hurt me. I listen to the gospel song that wonders about people who do wrong, yet still thrive in this world, even those claiming Christianity. I have to accept that what is impossible to understand here will be made clear when we go to God.
When I was a kid I rejected God, totally disavowed Christianity, told my Jewish friends I was a "Gentile", not a Christian. I had very good reasons for feeling that way. Thanks be to God, my heart was changed, and thus my life. He has forgiven me, and because of Him, I'm able to forgive those who hurt me.

I've kept the baby, the bathwater is the religious affects of Christianity. That I threw out in favor of the word of God and the Holy Spirit.

No but I have never had a good one either. That's exactly what I have done. Metaphorically of course I have never washed a baby. I just washed Christianity out of my hair and kept the hair.
