Originally they were made from minced beef with fruit added. Today they contain mixed fruit, spices and beef suet, and if your lucky, a drop of the hard stuff.

Traditionally they were made with lamb mince and dried fruits. Seriously!! I saw it on a traditional xmas cookery show on at xmas a few years back - I was shocked too, but it makes sense, they are called mince pies after all.
Ok so everyone else is saying beef mince, but they used lamb on the program i saw.

Mincemeat (which is the main ingredient in mince pies) is a conglomeration of dried fruit, distilled spirits and spices, and sometimes beef suet, beef, or venison. Originally, mincemeat always contained meat. Many modern recipes contain beef suet, though vegetable shortening is sometimes used in its place.

Because they are minced fruits etc. You have them confused with minced meat pies. BIG difference.

They were made with minced meat but all that remains of the meat today is shredded suet.

Well there used to be. Sweetened meat was usual a couple of hundred years ago. Couldn't fancy it myself though.
