please help....my dog had a litter of 6 pups 5 weeks ago.our intention has always been to keep one of them but none of us can agree on which one to keep.my hubbie is worried about keeping a boy and feels it would be better to have 2 girls together but my son is adamant he wants a boy...how do we choose??

we cant keep 2 of them as we just dont have enough room for 3 dogs,of course all dogs will be getting spayed/neutered so in breeding wont be a problem,i have heard though that some dogs will still try and mount a female even though he has been done.my hubbies problem is that he has been told a male dog may be more likely to figght with other male dogs on our walks,we do see some dogs whose owners are panicking when they see other dogs coming as they tend to fight and they all seem to be males,i also realise that you cant tar all males with the same brush and some would never fight but that is his problem ,is this true?

Personally I would watch the puppies and try to choose one whose personality best suited the mother regardless of sex.

If you choose a boy get him fixed fairly early (take your vets advice on when) this should prevent any possible problems with beeding or fighting.

See which one the mum wants to keep. A male dog should not be too aggressive if it has been neutered but may try and be the dominant dog within the home which may cause problems.

Why not take a boy and a girl and have them both spayed/neutered by 6 months before they reach sexual maturity. I did this with my first 2 dogs and never regretted it for a moment. That way everyone gets what they want.

Well, if you spay & neuter, then gender won't matter.

Get to know all the puppies and keep the one that is most bonded with your family. You'll love them all, and everyone will want a certain one, but see which puppy wants your family the most.

My dog (stray) blessed us with 4 puppies, and we attempted to re-home them all, but one of the little girls just wouldn't acknowledge anyone who had interest in her. She'd sit at my feet the entire time....
We still have her, she's almost 4 yrs old now.

i think that you should get the boy.
if you have two females then they are more likely to fight and not want to be around each other.
you just have to watch with having a male and a female, you may have to get one neutered, as bredding within the family is very dangerous. although you probably all ready know.

It depends on what you are looking for, the mother most likely won't fight with one of her pups, even later on in life regardless of gender. If you are looking for a calmer dog, pick them up, and hold them on their back in your arm, as you would a baby, the one that fights it the least, will be a calmer dog.

you should keep just the boy if you don't want anymore pups to be born. But if your not much bothered about that then you should keep one female and male to prevent the pups from becoming lonely.

aww, why choose both a girl and a boy. you'll have best of both worlds. you might just let them hang out awhile and see the pup's personality and decide then which one is right for you.

A girl would be better b-cuz u cant get more pups w/ 2 girls but if you want a boy then you could get 1 of 'em fixed.

My dog trainers say you are better off having one of each even if you neuter them both. They reckon there is less rivalry.
