My recruiter told me about Don't Ask Don't Tell but... I'm not ready to stop taking it yet.

He told me something about the fact that it was a mind-altering drug and how would they know if I REALLY wanted to enlist or something like that... idk

I'm planning on stopping taking it in a few months, but I just want to get the ball rolling already and go to freaking MEPS. How long does it take to get out of my system once I stop taking it?

I'm sure it could show up if they tested for it. But they don't test for everything possible. They just don't have the time or money for it.

"Don't Ask Don't Tell" is about homosexuals in the military. But, what he probably meant by it is that if they don't ask you about it, you shouldn't volunteer the information. If they do ask about, though, you should truthfully answer the question. Not doing so can cause you to get kicked out at a later date if they ever find out.

Also remember that you will not be able to take Prozac or any other prescription medication with you to Boot Camp. Any medication you take will have to be prescribed by a doctor while you are there. This even include over the counter medication. So if you are not ready to stop taking it now, and you don't want to tell them about it, you had better be ready to stop taking it by the time you go to Boot Camp.

Prozac will show in a drug screen. It is also not something you should just stop taking, especially if you feel you are not at a point where you feel comfortable doing so. Don't ask, don't tell is actually the military policy on homosexuality, not a general guideline used to cover anything that could possibly complicate your enlisting. Basic training is extremely stressful...emotionally as well as physically. If you have been under treatment for depression, stop the meds and then put yourself into a pressure filled enviroment, you really are asking for trouble...both in your own self and in the military. I would recommend putting off enlisting until you feel secure in going off your meds for the amount of time it will take you to complete at least your basic and tech school. You will not be able to get the meds while in basic (especially if the military has no idea you are on them) as you will have no access to any civilian pharmacies. The military will still be there in six months...take care of yourself and then enlist.

They're not testing you for medication, they're testing you for drugs. Plenty of people get in to bootcamp all the time, the problem is this: You WON'T be able to take the Prozac at basic so if you still need it, I would highly recommend you rethink your commitment to the Navy.

Also, the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' phrase refers to your sexual orientation.

If they do find the drug in your system at MEPS they won't do anything besides disqualify you. You can still go back and test later. They can't legally do anything to you because at MEPS you have yet to sign your enlistment papers, its the very last thing you do before they send you to basic.

Yes, it will. There's a chance that you may not be let into the service; you can't take meds for mental health issues while in boot camp. Let's say that you do pass the drug test; the first day of boot camp, you'll go through a psych evaluation; you may not pass it. Somewhere down the road, they'll find out.

Dont ask dont tell is about homosexuality... not depression. Unless you're depressed for being gay which is a contradiction in terms. Prozac does not show up on federal drug screenings (they're all the same). Good luck, shipmate.

Talk more to your recruiter and ask him if you can take a drug test before you go to meps...if it shows up talk to him more about it and if it doesnt dont worry about it...i dont think prozac would be a disqualifier for the navy, the worst you would get would be a waiver

you must be off the meds for 12 months before you can enlist. if you FAIL to disclose, it's YOUR butt that will be caught and prosecuted for Fraudulent Enlistment, not your Recruiters'.

DADT is regarding sexual preference, not whether or not you have medical issues that would DQ you from serving.

If they're testing for it that day it will. Tell your recruiter that you don't want to enlist fraudulently because it's a crime. After you are no longer on Prozac, you can enlist with honor.

More than likely it will and that would be reason enough to let you out especially if you withheld information when asked....
