I have been to several Christmas parties that have had them. Not weird at all.

Not weird at all. I was at a party yesterday where "smucky" little smokies were served and they were delicious. Same sweet and savory idea as your meatballs-the gal that made the smucky sauce did it by putting about a cup of brown sugar in a small crock pot and adding just enough BBQ sauce and a little Worcestershire to make a paste. She added little cocktail wieners, but said Kielbasa, smoked sausage pieces or meatballs could be used.

I am afraid yes. It is a very odd dish to take to any party, what are BBQ meatballs exactly. I am thinking Swedish meatballs coated in BBQ sauce which I am afraid makes me feel vaguely unwell.
