Frontline is a pesticide and pesticides are poison. Is there a risk? Yes, but there's also a risk to not using Frontline-type products.

My dog had a bad reaction to Frontline the first time we applied it (6 months old). He acted as if it was burning his skin. In the following days, he started acting listless and wasn't a happy dog. And then he quickly went down hill. Basically, he became an insulin dependent diabetic. We got him from a reputable breeder and there is no diabetes in his pedigree, not to mention that diabetes in a 6 month old puppy is unheard of. He's OK now but we have to give him insulin twice a day.

I am convinced that Frontline caused it. But I still use frontline because it's still safer than the bug born diseases such as Lyme's disease.

However, I would not give Frontline to a puppy less than 9 months old, particularly puppies that are sensitive, and I would not apply it to a puppy that had just recently been given any shots.

Unfortunately, anything chemical runs a risk of unwanted reactions.

I use Frontline for my cat, but she does not get it once a month. She gets it only when I feel she really needs it (if I find a flea in the house, or if I foster kittens that come in with fleas)

Since she's normally the only pet in the household (except my rats) and she's strictly indoors, there's no real reason for month-to-month protection, in my personal opinion.

By the way, that article is ONLY on Bio Spot, which is cheap 'protection' from your local Walmart or grocery store. Anyone in their right mind would purchase Advantage or Frontline from a vet to ensure the health of their animals.

They are mostly talking about BioSpot.....which is OTC CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is NOT the same as Frontline and Advantage.
People should have a freaking clue that OTC products like this are crap...and they do not work.
The fact remains that Frontline and Advantage are very safe products. There are not many non-chemical choices when treating fleas. Not treating for fleas can lead to tapeworms,(which require ANOTHER medication to treat) and anemia that can be fatal.

Biospot is crap. Use Frontline Plus or Advantage. They are safe and effective when used correctly.

Fleas are very unsafe for your dog too.
