I have a prescription for hydrocodone. I just got it filled last week, but I would like to get it refilled right away because I am going out of town and my pharmacy doesn't have a branch anywhere near where I'm going. (In fact, I'm going to a very rural place where its going to be a big hassle to get to ANY pharmacy.) The prescription was written "take 1 pill every 6 hours as needed for pain" and the quantity was 60 with 2 refills. Doing the math, if I took one every six hours I would run out 15 days after I first got it filled.

When I realized that this is going to be a problem, I took it to the pharmacy and asked them if they could refill it but they said no. This was only a few days after it was written. I am not submitting this to insurance, so its the rules made by the pharmacy or the government that I need to know. Thanks in advance.

That amount you receive is a 15 day supply at label snstructions. You must be at least 12 days along before they can legally refill that prescription. If you must have it sooner than that call your doc and (s)he can write another prescription.

I just wanted to note: I was surprised by what the medical assistant said - you DO sleep but when you are in severe pain, you often need to take your pain medication in order to GET any sleep! Otherwise pain will keep you awake.

As to your question - talk to your doctor. Ask him to write you a prescription that will cover your trip. The pharmacy can't just make a decision, but if you submit a new prescription they can fill it.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. A hydrocodone overdose can be fatal, especially in a child or other person using the medicine without a prescription. Overdose symptoms may include slow breathing and heart rate, severe drowsiness, muscle weakness, cold and clammy skin, pinpoint pupils, and fainting.

A a medical assistant working in a doctors office that is the problem in a nut shell. Just because a RX says every 6 hours does not mean you need to take it every 6 hours. YOU DO SLEEP SOMETIMES DONT YOU.

Explain this to the Pharmacist, tell them you are going out of town and ask your Pharmacist if they could give you enough to get you through your trip. Sometimes they will and sometimes they won't.

It's the law, narcotic analgesics are very tightly controlled. You cannot get them refilled ahead of time.
