Once upon a time, there was Mr.Caveman who was very cold due to low winter temperatures. He first tried cuddling with Mrs. Caveman, but he soon found out that keeping the two of them warm won't be enough to save their two children - Cavian and Cavita.
While he was pondering over the issue, a nice little bear walked by. Mr Caveman, already being an experienced hunter, decided to kill the bear and at least feed his family.
And then a miracle happened!
He rubbed his almost frozen body against the bear's warm fur. Quickly he ripped the bear's skin off and and wrapped himself inside.
''Mmmm'' was the sound of pleasure Mrs. Caveman heard and she walked out to see what pleased her beloved.
...
Somebody else finish the story, I'm a little tired LOL.

I see your point, but cold or not, it's to protect from the elements in every climate. In the middle east, clothes are worn to protect from sand and sun, both extremely painful when mixed with wind. in the colder climates, it's pretty obvious, for warmth, but, we are omnivores, we eat plants and meat. When we kill an animal, the best way to dispose of the carcass, was to USE it... use the bones for tools, use the empty carcus as a heat vessel... even here, it's widely known to most farm children that if for some reason, they get stranded in the snow and cold and have to kill an animal such as a cow or a deer for food, then they should use it's body as warmth, by climbing into the carcass. the idea of clothes probably evolved from something similar... take out all the meat, eat it, then put the skin back on.
Necessity is the mother of invention. ;)

I've just walked up from the town where the temperature is close to minus 4 C with a bitter East wind blowing. I had two coats on and a scarf and a hat and I was bloody cold. You can go up there naked if you like but for me, give me a warm coat and a hot water bottle too!

Adam & Eve tried some type of clothing made with first leaves but God provided them with animal fur.
Besides that, when man (believers or not) relized that sometimes our skin / fat was not enough to protect from cold weather, and even in tropical climate our skin needs protection from sun rays they started to find a solution and clothing made of animal fur, wool, or from vegetable origin like leaves or cotton was an acceptable alternative.

First, since it's freezing cold up here, we need clothes to keep ourselves warm.
Second, people, especially men, are too horn y so they would feel se xual desire every time they see an uncovered body, so in order to perform daily life for some people, it's necessary for us to cover up. If all of us started wearing no clothes, then the rate of rape would increase drastically.
Also, for many people, they manage to look nice, or at least don't look too horrible, because they cover themselves up. It's a very good way to hide ugly body fat.

I think it's just natural to want to be warm. So - instinct? I don't know about you - but I can't even imagine being naked outside right now. Yikes. Heck with that. You bet if I was freezing I'd be killing animals to make a coat. I love animals, but my will to survive is stronger. Now if I lived someplace warm I wouldn't mind running around naked.

Right now, sitting here in the middle of the North American continent in mid-December, I am very grateful that my ancestors decided wearing clothes was a good idea. If not, I'd be very, very cold.

We used to have fur, but a few hundred thousand years of wearing other animals' fur, made our own fur less necessesary evolutionarily speaking, and we eventually became mostly furless.
So now we have to wear clothes to keep warm and to provide other protection that our own fur used to provide, or whatever...
Church folks will give you the tale of Adam and Eve and their talking snake.

I think this came when Eve and Adam where cast out
of Eden. God made them modest and ashamed. If you
believe that man evolved from apes then we discovered tha wearing animal skins kept us warm
and the idea took off from there.
