Until she's out of heat. Average is about 21 days.

Personally, I would not support the dogs misbehavior by consoling him... you're telling him he's right.

Thousands of intact dogs go to dogshows with in heat b*tches and very very few of them attempt what you're describing because it simply would not be tolerated. They learn from the get-go they don't get to breed and are told in no uncertain terms to "knock it the *bleep* off!!" if they start acting like brats.

Realize, from a breeder's perspective, b*tch in heat simply IS. There is nothing special about it and a dog who learns this is young is a LOT easier to deal with.

Listen to the answers that say 3 weeks,,,that's correct,,and to be safe you should really make it 4 weeks that they are separated.

Listen to the ones that say do not console the male. When you pet and love on him, it just makes him think that its ok to behave that way, and will make it worse not better.

Neutering is the correct term for both male and female dogs
Spaying is females
Castrating is males

If you aren't planning to breed them, then you can get them fixed to stop all of this behavior. If you do plan to breed later, I'm afraid you'll just have to deal with this every 4-6 months. It won't matter if they can see each other or not, since the male is behaving this way because of how she smells. The only other thing you can try is boarding the male somewhere else during the duration of the heat cycle. I wouldn't trust boarding the female with someone else as they could let her get to a male by accident.

Considering my female Rottweiler stretched out on the ground with her"good girl" in the air, screaming come and get me to any male that was around, yes, believe it or not size does not matter. For, where there is a will, they will always find a way. Your male is at the right age to be able to breed, so keep them separated. Better yet, he is at the perfect age to neuter, so consider that option. For the record, my girl did that to my neutered male, and he showed no interest. But, your boy will, so if your girl should put herself in such a position, the result would be more unneeded puppies in the world.

I would probably get him fixed. A female dogs heat cycle occurs 2 times a year and it lasts about 18 to 24 days. So i think they best thing to do is fix him. There is really nothing to do, males go crazy when females are in heat cycle.

Your dog is extremely sexually frustrated and the only thing to do is get them both spayed and neutered. It's cruel to let your dog feel this way. It's irresponsible to not spay and neuter. Another dog could end up breeding your female and then you'll have more puppies to add to the horrible pet overpopulation problem in this country.

Approx 21 days is the length of time. You get your female spayed. male neutered.. The male will always act like that.. As time goes on, and he never gets bred, it will get worse and worse and worse and worse.. Till you go insane trying to do anything for those 3 weeks cause the male is out of his mind.

Until her heat cycle is over...but then it will continue again when she has her next heat (in about 6 months).

If you get your dogs spayed and neutered, you won't have to worry about this ever again. If money is a problem, there are many vets who do if for very low prices because they care about animals enough to not worry about the money. I have included a link that allows you to do a search for these vets. Good luck! Please get your dogs spayed/neutered!
