I have long hair done to my middle back but my split ends aren't just at the ends - they extend all the way up to my chin! I never ever blow dry or straighten my hair, I don't really ever use any chemicals on it (besides shampoo & conditioner - I wash it every other day) yet I still have really dry frazzled and and a constant fuzz of split ends throughout.

Why?
And more importantly, how can I get rid of the problem?

Unless you have extremely oily hair you do not have to wash your hair every day. If you feel that you must wet your hair each day, do just that, wet it. After wetting, use a light conditioner. It is the shampoo that dries out your hair.
If you "blow out" your hair, use a leave-in product that contains silicone, like Sebastian Laminates Crema Styler Anti-Frizz Control. Dry hair until it is about 85% dry. Now start the straightening process, with the dryer on medium heat. Do NOT use a round brush (hair tends to get stuck and break off). Use a paddle brush and keep the brush facing down.
If you have curly hair, again you want silicone. Try Sebastian Laminates Curl, and let your hair air dry. If you must blow dry, use medium heat with a diffuser.
Finish off with a smoother containing silcone, like Paul Mitchell Gloss Drops.
Keep your hair healthy. Use a good shampoo and conditioner. Sometimes .99 Suave works great, sometimes you'll have to cough up a bit more. Try different shampoo/conditioners and see what works.
Leave in conditioners are good for people who have excessively dry or damaged hair and can prevent split ends.
Eat healthy! Have a good dose of good fats in your diet. It'll keep your hair healthy, among other things.
Make sure to keep your hair trimmed, it'll keep the split ends problem at a minimum and keeps you looking groomed.
Avoid the blow-dryer! Go ahead and use it occasionally, but if you use it too often and/or at high heat, you can fry your hair, causing tons and tons of split ends.
Use regular Coconut oil in its pure form and apply to your hair the night before you wash your hair. Leave it on through the night.
Use of 1:1 portion of Castor and Coconut oil is suggested to increase the Vitamin E content. Castor Oil by itself is believed to strengthen hair and increase hair growth
I hope this helps

Your shampoo, conditioner, as well as the weather can affect your hair. You could also be using the wrong brush. Try using a pick or a wide tooth comb...

I like redken (all soft) line, Pureology nanoworks ,and a few others. Put a leave in conditioner in your hair too.

Even though your trying to grow your hair out, you have to get it trimmed every once and a while. You can't just grow it out and not take care of it properly. Since you haven't gotten it trimmed in so long, you'll probably have to get a major hair cut... sorry, but thats the truth.
