I love DC! I was born there and visit the city regularly. I prefer to stay in northern virginia than actually in DC. You do have to be careful as there are unsafe areas of DC. Other areas (like Georgetown) are pretty nice.

Stay out of South East if you can. Downtown can be alright. If you go to Northwest, its really nice, especially along Rock Creek. There are a few rich and hyper-rich people who live there. It also has the National Zoo.
Just be careful.

Even with the high cost of fuel, I / we would travel hundreds of miles out of our way to avoid it.
