Are you mixing or drinking it straight? I'm thinking you probably want rum because it mixes much better. Brandy is seen as a more "classy" liquor that you sip on, although it does mix extremely well with Coke which I learned in South Africa. That is if you get some cheap brandy, but most tends to be expensive.

Booths Supermarkets, they are a little dearer shop and
few and far between, but if they have'nt got it, they
will do their best to attain !!! (I am in the North
of the Country, Lake District, and we have many local
markets who cater for this sort of thing !!!

Most supermarkets, will sell it though it might be you have to ask assistants as they don't always put the stuff where you expect. Like Vanilla Essence i think was with the baking stuff? this was in Waitrose.
