If you look how the smaller ones are constructed, you will see they use a 'funneling' system. The larger ones work the same way. Crabs find the hole coming in (led by the scent of bait), but can't make their way out again.

The "pots" as they are called, are constructed with funnel-shaped entrances with the inner opening well off the "floor" of the pot. The crab can find the entrance hole in the side of the pot, and crawl in. He will remain there until he has eaten his fill. If he tries to get out, he simply crawls around the inner wall of the cage without ever finding the funnel entrance

They have a hole the crabs crawl in to, but are too dumb to find the way out. The hole is mid way up the crab trap, & the tunnel (hole I was referring to ) goes a little way in to the empty box & it's shaped like > out of flexable wire with both ends loose...It closes back. it's kind of hard to explain. Look at pictures of one & you'll see what I'm talking about.

Simple really they crawl through a tunnel to get to the bait but its narrow at the other and and they can squeeze through when it comes to getting out they struggle and cant, leaving them in the net pot
