Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Theodore Roosevelt 1907

Wow, a hundred years ago, & it still makes so much sense!
We need more leaders like him, unfortunately, we don't have anything like him now!

We do read it. Somebody posts it at least once a day. Do I agree? If by "in good faith" you mean "under our laws" then yes. I don't think anyone who comes here illegally should ever be given legal residency. It's just not fair to those who do go about things legally--or to anyone who resides legally in this country.

i agree and disagree with certain things about that statement. Its a very simple thing...if your here illegally get citizenship or leave!! If your here learn English! I would never expect to move to another country and not know there language.

Yes, and I've always felt that way. I never have been able to understand why someone would choose to live in any country in the world and refuse to pledge allegiance to the same.

Absolutely agree! Every generation of immigrants before this one assimilated to a degree into the American culture. I am afraid we are no longer a melting pot, but a conglomeration of hypenated nationalities.....

I don't agree with all of it. I think people should never forget their roots and should be able to be proud of their roots and enjoy their rooted counties flag. I do think that if one comes to America, they do need to abide by American laws, such as becoming a citizen and paying taxes like everyone else. I do think they should appreciate the American flag, and display it proudly along side their roots flag. This country belonged to the Indian culture, we took it, now they are native Americans, we have African Americans, etc... so we should be able to be proud of each heritage. This country is the melting pot of immigrants. We are all immigrants. as far as the language, sure English, but that is ones personal choice to learn it. why not learn as much as you can???

I agree with Theodore Roosevelt, all people should be treated equally without persecution, no matter what race, religion, or skin color they are. All men are created equally.

The Constitution guarantees the CITIZENS of the
United States protect under our Constitution. They
are expected to follow our laws. They took that pledge when they raised their right hand and pledged their ELEGANCE to the United States.

I do agree with it. Light knows why, but my views on illegal immigration are pretty much equal to those of the Republicans.
