Recipes call for oil or broth being "divided". What does that mean?

Read a little further down in the recipe. Say it calls for 1 cup sugar, divided. 1/2 cup might go into the batter, 1/2 cup may go into the icing, for example. So it's just telling you that all total you'll be needing 1 cup, but just not used all at once, it'll be used in different steps.

divided means to divide
say the recipe calls for 1 1/2 cups flour (divided)
read further down in the recipe, most likely it will say something like 1/2 cup flour for the topping and 1 cup of flour in the batterr, etc....

It means that you will use it in 2 different parts of the recipe. each part of the recipe will call for some of the ingredient. the amount listed is both parts combined. DO NOT ADD THE FULL AMOUNT TO THE FIRST PART OF THE RECIPE !

Divided in half. Half saved in reserve for use later on in the recipe.
