been looking for a decent compact digicam and have been thinking bout a nikon P5100 or canon G9, but what about the G7 its a lot cheaper than the G9 and apart from the G9 and having RAW capability and a bigger LCD is there any other differences/advantages to one over the other?

I have a G6 that has seen a lot of use. The G7 lacks RAW, and the lens is a tad slower. I'm sure it is a great camera all the same. You probably won't be disappointed. It's not very compact, though. The G9 may have better noise control at higher ISO. Try www,dpreview.com for specs and reviews on that or other cameras.

I recently bought a camera. I was looking at the G7 and G9, Canon TX1 and Panasonice TZ3. After 4 weeks of research on everything from feel and size, to image quality and functions, i chose the Panasonic TZ3. 2 weeks on, and its perfect - buy it online and you get it so much cheaper. I paid £174 & got 2 years warrenty on top. The problems with the G7 is its size and quality. Panasonic smashes it to pieces 0 the G9 has better image quality, but in the light, its minimal. & The G9 size is awful. Hop this helps. ps Nikon have been known to be unreliable.

I think the G7 has a LCD screen that swivels, so that is an advantage it has over the G9. If you don't mind the smaller LCD and don't need RAW capability, it is a bargain. I like that an external Canon flash can be attached to all of the G series cameras.

i understand the G7/G9 has an optical viewfinder (i'm exceptionally particular the Nikon does too, could be sure on that.) sure you could exchange all the settings manually like on a DSLR, Aperture/Shutter speed/ISO etc. you will even have uncooked potential. do not anticipate SLR high quality photos even with the incontrovertible fact that, the processors are good yet they nevertheless have tiny sensors while in comparison with their DSLR cousins. Canon G9 is the better of those you have chosen.

I would go with a Sony Cyber-Shot they work well and have lots of bells and whistles. You can record video, take pictures and much more.

A very good camera but quite expensive. I wonder if you get your money's worth.
