airbrushing people on GIMP?

hi there. some people just advised me to d/l GIMP which i have done. i have some close up photos i want to do some work on and remove some blemishes, marks, freckles etc...

could anyone advise me how to do this, so that the face looks - well, smoooth lol!

Blemishes and other retouching is usually done with the clone tool or the healing tool.
