AIT is Advanced Individual Training which is the training you receive upon completion of Basic to teach you the basic functions of your Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). They don't shoot real bullets at you until OJT (On-the-job Training) which is usually only for certain MOSs that deploy to a theater of operations. The duration for AIT will vary depending on which MOS you choose and in some cases is combined with Basic to make what is called OSUT (One Station Unit Training).

There are certain MOS's that do train with live ammo. But only after they've been trained in the classroom and in the field with simulation exercises.
What you do at AIT depends on your MOS. Some people learn about communications, aviation support, computers, languages.. etc. Its just like going to a really specialized college to learn about a particular subject.. but with physical training and inspections.

AIT stands for Advanced Individual training. It is specific to each soldiers job. For instance if I was a Ground RADAR techinician I would go to a school which taught me how to repair the systems that I would be responsible to repair when I get assigned to duty wherever that job may be. AIT is the 2nd school Army service members go to. The 1st is Basic training where all soldiers learn basic soldier skills such as rifle marksmanship, physical training (to get soldiers in shape) and military policies. I hope this helps.

Ait is where you trains for your mos. If you fail your mos training for your initial job, the army will place you into another high demand mos. So don't fail the initial training
