In the city in China where I spent most of my time, in Herbei Province, they were not. In fact there was not a pearl market that I could find. The silk market was with all the other textiles, and it was basically a massive alley in the town.

My wife bought approximately 20 meters of beautiful silk, and we now have it as a window treatment in our Great Room. While there, she also was taken to a large department store in a mall of sorts. There a man took a couple of measurements and for approximately 60USD (in local currency) they made her a beautiful hand stitched silk outfit. I say it this way because they had some patterns there, like the old Vogue pattern books you might see in a US fabric store. All the man did was look at the picture, and take a few measurements. Two days later she went back to the store for a fitting and the next day it was done.

This is my favorite outfit she wears.
