We pray to say thank you and to ask for guidance. Then we be still and listen for the answer.
Listening is the most important aspect of praying.
God wants to talk to us but most of us are too busy asking for things to listen.
When you pray get your talking over as soon as possible, and just listen.
There is no one that God is not talking to, there are just people who are not listening.
Love and blessings Don

Anytime I feel the need for guidance or I want to express emotion I pray. When an ambulance passes me, I pray "God be with everyone connected to that - victim, medical worker, firefighter, or police officer." Or if I learned someone I care about has died, I pray "Thank you God for letting me know that person. Help me deal with the pain." Or when my children test me I pray "God help me!"
But every night before I fall asleep, I push aside all the To Do's for the next day and concentrate on praying thanks for all the blessings I have. After thanking Him for all the blessings I can and cannot think of, I ask help for others or myself.
As for physical posturing, I don't bother. He hears me lying in my bed and He doesn't mind if I fall asleep mid-prayer. He doesn't mind if I pray while driving or while holding my children.

From your last question, I think I can assume that you've accepted Jesus into your life. Congratulations! :)
You are now God's child, so you can pray to Him in a way that is natural to you. Respectfully, of course, but also confident. Basically, just talk to Him. You can pray out loud or quietly, kneeling, standing, sitting, whatever you want. The most important thing is just that you _do_ pray.
:)

Often alone in the quiet, sometimes out loud, sometimes in my head. Other times with a group of people, out loud, sometimes with a group of people - quietly.
I thank God for all he has done for me and any help or blessings I feel he has given me recently (answered prayers, my good health, the health of my family, seeing me through a stormy period, etc.) - I also pray for others that I care about, I pray for His guidance/help and wisdom in life, I pray for any special needs I have or that others may have. I thank Him again for hearing my prayer and for answering them how and when he sees fit.
That's it in a nutshell.

I first give thanks for all of my blessings then I ask God to help and protect all of my loved ones. If I have a problem I ask him to guide me through it and to help me become the person he wants me to be.
