You have to be on the sea if you want to fish.
Thus, if you want to date, don't isolate yourself get into the social scene.

I'm not sure of the context it was said in...
But the "fish in the sea" thing is usually used for dating/ relationship advice, meaning that there are plenty of other men/ women out there, don't get hung up on one.
The being alone in the desert thing...
Either the guy is really ugly, or some other thing keeping them from meeting women. It could be something as simple as working too much and not having the time to meet the many women that are out there.

The "plenty of other fish in the sea" is a standard line used after a break-up with a gf/bf. I assume that the rest indicates that the state of mind that the person is in isolates them and will prevent them from moving on and forming a new relationship. Until they can "come out of the desert" and rejoin society, they cannot go "fishing" and "catch the big one!"
Peace!

The quote used to be "There are plenty more fish in the sea" quite often referring to when you've just broken up in a relationship, meaning, don't worry, there are other boys/girls around, you'll be ok.
Perhaps this quote means, "You're in the middle of nowhere, make do with what you've got..."

I don't know.. I kind of take it as the person doesn't want any old fish from the sea.. they want this person, alone, because this person is far off and more amazing than any other fish they'd come across.
OR, it could mean that the person isn't even on the dating scene at all.. not sure which!

The expression "plenty of other fish in the sea" is usually used to encourage someone that just got dumped, telling them there are a lot of other people out there.
The tag line is telling them that they are looking in the wrong places for them. Like a woman that just lost her boyfriend and wants to start dating again probably won't see a lot of opportunity hanging out in gay bars or going to PTA meetings, or expect to meet the man of her dreams if she works in the intensive care psych ward of a hospital, or as an apprentice undertaker. Yeah, there's others "out there", but you ain't out there.

i basically think that in this case fish refers to the opportunities that r there b4 u.but u have 2 put effort from the land 2 go 2 the sea.and u have 2 do it all by urself as u r 'alone'.u have 2 improve ur attitude/aptitude as u r not anywhere near the abilities of gettin the opportunities(u'r not anywhere near the sea).i think that's wat it means

Its a joke. Its basically sayin' even though there are other people (fish) out there (in the sea) that you could be with. You will not be with them bc you are bound to the desert (being alone) its a joke.

It is a rather negative view of a persons prospects of finding someone to love and be loved by. Not very realistic since who is really so alone? If they are it is by choice.

It's a demotivator. You know all those Despair, Inc. products? That's where it's from. Basically it means that there's no one out there for you.
