My 9 year old sister has a computer in her room, when she first got it, it worked perfectly. But then after a few months the computer started to become the slowest piece of machinery ever. You have to wait half an hour after turning the computer on for everything to load, you have to wait at 30 seconds for anything you clicked to work. And she hardly has anything downloaded do the space is not the problem. Does anyone know how to fix this other then re installing windows??
Thanks

Does she have internet access? If she does, does she have an anti-virus or firewall installed? I would start by running a free program like Ad-aware, then try to install a anti virus such as Avast or AVG . If the PC is too slow to access these FREE programs off the net you may have to do it from a working PC, make copies then transfer to the slow one.

The reason behind this problem may be harmful viruses or spyware. You should make sure that the operating system installed on her computer is kept away from them thanks to a well-known protection system. Or, maybe someone has accidently deleted some of the important system files inside the folders from which Windows operates. This generally requires you to backup and restore the broken part(s) of the system or even in some cases the entire system. Finally, there might be some sort of cumbersome program that always prevents the user from performing regular tasks. To deal with this, you should simply use the computer keyboard command "ctrl+alt+delete" to access the task manager and see what program(s) consume most of RAM you have. If there is a particular program using your computer's memory resources though you never run it, you'd better consider deleting it or doing a brief search on it before solving the proplem.

Type 'msconfig' in Run. In the window check Selective, click on Startup uncheck programs which you understand can be disabled to start in Windows right away. Restart the comp. Delete all icons on the desktop which you do not use often (you have them in all program list anyway). Besides if you have installed Google Earth and 3D Screensavers and stuff like that they also are the reason to slower your comp to start.
Run Ad-Adware and Ccleaner. After that check prefetch, temp and %temp% in Run and delete all files there, open My Computer, right click on the icon and go to Properties, run Disk clean-up. Restart the comp and when you see the Windows logo keep typing F8 to choose Safe mode. After that go to System Tools and perform Disc Defrag.
Check if you can remove programs which you do not use often as well.

Open "My Computer" and right click the "Local Disk"
and choose properties. Select "Disk Cleanup" and
check mark all the boxes, and click Accept. It might take a
while. After this, in the same window go to "Tools" and choose
"Defragment Now...", after you finish, restart the computer
and it should work properly.
