God is letting us know he is all powerful which means he isn't a joke. Jokes tend to disrespect others and God will not be disrespected.

One can joke about a motorcycle but if you don't respect that motorcycle while you're riding it, it will kill you.

The actual meaning of "thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain" is that you are prohibited from making frivolous vows to god.

Any vow made to YHWH was obligated to be carried out. That's why Jephthah had to kill his own daughter, because he had made a stupid vow to the war god YHWH.

It is about respect. If you respect God, then you aren't going to want to do anything that would diminish that respect in others eyes.

God has a lot of patience's...after all...He gives you lots of time to repent.
