There are lots of places you can put commas...
You can use a ; in place of a comma if there are 2 independent clauses and you don't want to use a conjunction.

There are too many uses for commas to be covered here easily. You need to get a grammar handbook and read the section on commas. Or try these sites: owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/grammar/g_comma.html
grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/commas.htm
www.lycoming.edu/arc/current/COMMAS.html
Or go to the main page of Yahoo! and type "commas" into the search box.

As for the other two marks, : is a colon and means "the following." It should only be used at the end of what would be a complete sentence, not between the verb and its complement. One should write, "These are my best friends: Judith, Barbara, and Wendy," not "My best friends are: Judith, Barbara, and Wendy." A colon can also be used to connect two indedpendnt clauses IF the second one explains or enlarges on the first. For example, "When I visited the family, the children were engaged in dagerous activities: Tom was on the garage roof, Dick was jumping off the porch, and Harriet was playing with matches."

The semicolon (;) is used in situations in which a comma isn't strong enough: to connect two independent clauses without a conjunction and in a list to separate items that already contain commas, such as a list of addresses.

commas are like minin full stops to tell people to take a breat in between a sentence. for exmaple if it is a list or a connective.

i.e. i went to the shops and got a basket of eggs, milk, cheese and honey.

or.... i was very frightned of the scary dark ctahedral as night creeped in, until i saw my sister.

: is a colon and ; is a semi colon i am not quite sure what they are for either. my school was very bad a teaching my to read and wright and left primary school (at 11) bearly being able to read or write (you can problay see how bad my spelling is). i have just picked up what i know from practise and asking people.

I remember getting a 14-year old student who truly believed that you put commas in your writing to show where you would take a breath!

A comma should be inserted when you need to break a sentence, this is when the sentence splits from one topic or statement to another. For example "John walked to the shop only to find it was closed, he was very upset and decided to walk back home" It was split to convey the two actions that John did.

: Is a semi colon, it is used for listing or references.

Example, Shopping List: milk, eggs, bread, cheese etc.

I barely ever use semi colons ( ; ) but colons you use for if your doing this
The things that he wants for x-mas is:
a bike
a car....ect ect
mainly when you name off things....
commas can be used for many things like:
I, bob (not my real name), am a guy. (not really)
commas are also to be used after and, but, and or
Like the following sentence:
I have a dog, cat, and a bird.
HOPE THIS HELPS!

What happened to education? I learned that at primary in the 50's, and colons and - exclamation marks, before they were called "speech marks" and you had to wiggle fingers of both hands in the air to explain it. My daughter is at University and I asked her if she had to precis her work. She didn't know what a precis was. (Still I love her!)
