I was trying to hold my hamster so I put my hand at the bottom of the tank. He came over and nipped my hand and then licked it a little. Is that his way of saying hello?
Lol.

could be you just startled him. Never wake a sleeping hamster. And if she/he had just awoke, ...their eye sight isnt the greatest and can be startled easily. Just kiss him and forgive him! ...and clean his tank!

He was just curious. Hamsters don't have very good eyesite so sometimes they rely on taste, and biting to figure out what is near them. It probably didn't mean any harm, since it was a nip then a lick, it was just him investigating his surroundings.

first of all -- you need to break him of that. If he nips someone and breaks the skin it could make that person pretty sick. you've heard people say "dirty rat" well, there's a reason. They have tons of bacteria in their mouths that could cause infection. Put on gloves with something really icky tasting on them and eventually he'll learn what NOT to bite. I used a mix of vinegar and chili powder for mine (not much --- because it could hurt his digestive system ) hamster farts yuck !! PS. i tried time out --- he didn't get that. stupid hamster. good luck

He either wanted to be left alone or he smelled food on your hands. Wash your hands before you hold him otherwise it may result in extreme pain =)))

Their are 3 possibilities {none of them are bad}
*Yes this could be a way of saying hello.
Or
*He/she could be a big hungry.
Or
*He/she could smell food you have on your fingers...

if he isn't hungry he was probably excited to see you. Handle him and play with him a little more. If he is bad tempered you will know.

they just do that, sometimes they get scared, don't worry about it, but if u don't hold him all the time he will bite you every time you pick him up.

Well, I don't think hamsters understand that concept, but it probably is a friendly gesture.
