If you have insurance, they usually have doctor referrals on their websites. If you are in a ppo or hmo, they will have a list of docs who are in the network.
Hospitals and GP's are usually the ones who have referrals.

Unfortunately, getting a good fit, emotionally and financially, can be difficult. After getting a referral, call their office and talk with the office staff. Ask what they specialize in among other things. If possible, talk with the psychiatrist by phone. If you don't feel comfortable, after the first visit, find another doctor!
Also, investigate the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist. I find psychologist better for me. They mostly use talk and hypnosis. They know the local doctors and can make referrals if they think drugs may help. Psychiatrist are quick to jump into prescribing pills to fix everything.
Best of Luck.

First, check out the 1-800-therapist website, in section 1, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris I'd then use the locators in section 1, and the phone book, to find a psychologist who believes in minimal necessary medication, or you can get a referral from your doctor. Psychiatrists are overly influenced by the hype from the BIG PHARMA sales reps, in my opinion, but psychologists don't prescribe, so are less targetted by those reps.

Do something crazy in the mall and wait for the police to come, they'll take you to one right away. I mean really let loose.
No !!! I'm just playing with you !!!
Go to a regular doctor, he'll refer you to the closest and best one you can get.

You can usually get a recommendation from your family physician or call your local hospital - most all hospitals have physician referral lines.

Most communities have a mental health clinic. You can find yours by calling your hospital and asking if you dont have a family doc.

your work probably has a toll-free number you can call, like an employee assistance number, to refer you without having to see a doctor first.

Have your primary care physician recommend one for you, or if you have insurance, pick someone close to you on your insurance list, but make sure they specialize in the area you're concerned with. xoxo
