The current governor of Wisconsin, Jim Doyle, wants smoking use in the state reduces to help curb health related issues, amongst other things. Right now, he's pushing for a statewide ban on smoking in public places, following the leads of a few municipalities which already have such ordinances.

The extra revenues raised from the high taxes are to be used to help offset public expenditures for those who become ill from smoking.

The tax are high for two reasons: One, to generate revenue for the state; Two, to discourage importing cigarettes and thus reduce smoking. Reducing smoking reduces the cost of medical services for the nicotine addicts. Why worry about it if you are smart enough not to smoke?

You should try Michigan's.

Government tells us it is to "protect" us and keep us from smoking.

Reality is that federal and state cigarette taxes are a HUGE money maker for the government.

They don't care about our health, they care about their own pay packages and how to fund them. Taxes, taxes, and more taxes.
