A lot of religious people are so set in their beliefs that they become closed minded to think that there could be any other way. Its natural really to stand up for what you believe in so strongly. I personally believe that there is no right or wrong religion and everyone has the right to believe what they want to. I'm an atheist myself, and like you, I'm not questioning whether or not God exists, I just choose not to follow him as my God. I choose not to have a religion. I was raised Baptist, but have always felt this way. Not everyone has a God. Your friend only feels that way because he feels so strongly about his religion. If I were you, I would consider the argument a lost cause, because like I said, there's probably nothing that you can do to change his opinion.

Atheism is a definition of *beliefs*.

The definition of "atheist" is "One who does not believe in the existence of God(s)"

Whether or not there actually *is* a God or not has nothing to do with it.

If he is trying to suggest that atheists have another sort of "god", (such as money, sports, music, etc.) then that is not correct. The definition of "God" when it comes to "atheist" or "theist" is referring to supernatural beings, not inanimate objects that someone holds in high esteem. When theists try to present that argument to say that there's no such thing as atheists, it just scraping the bottom of the desperation barrel.

An atheists and a person who has a "god" both have their place in the lake of fire (hell). This is not my word but the Word of God. However, you and your friend have a chance to escape hell by repentance and believing in Jesus Christ. John 3:16

Exodus 20
The Ten Commandments
1 And God spoke all these words:
2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

3 "You shall have no other gods before [a] me.

Please do some researching by reading the Bible.

You know what? Why even argue about such matters to begin with? I mean really who cares what others believe?

Arguing over religion is often more harmful than good--it only serves to divide people into stupid categories.

Just live your life in the best way you can, do no harm and avoid all forms of fanaticism period.

Yes, that is correct. An atheist is a person who does not believe in any higher power, what ever you may name it. Atheists believe only in what they can see and feel, wich is only natural by the way.

You and the first answer are correct as far as it goes but you forget one thing. Your god can be physical.

Whatever is your main concern in life is your god. Be it TV, video games, sports, girls, etc. is your god. That is why the Bible says there are many gods and many lords (small g & l). [1Corinthians 8:5]

You can make sports stars or Hollywood stars your god.

I guess it depends on your definition of "having a god".

I've always been taught that your "god" is the thing on which you dedicate yourself to. It could be your car, your job, your family, money, even yourself.

It's the thing you like to talk about when there's nothing left to talk about. It's the thing you like to think about when there's nothing else to think about. It's where your heart goes and what you mind dwells on - it's where you put your devotion.

With THAT kind of definition, EVERY body has SOME kind of god or God.

No, the correct word is Conclusion, not choice. An atheist has concluded there are no gods of any sort.

No. Neither of you are correct.

Your friend is in err because atheists do exist.
You are in err because I do not acknowledge the existence of gods any more than I do the tooth fairy
