Constantine found that with the Roman Empire being so vast, expansive, and diverse – not everyone would agree to forsake their religious beliefs and instead embrace Christianity. So, Constantine allowed, and even promoted, the “Christianization” of pagan beliefs. Completely pagan and utterly unbiblical beliefs were given new “Christian” identities.
The Cult of Isis, an Egyptian mother-goddess religion, was absorbed into Catholic Christianity by replacing Isis with Mary. Many of the titles that were used for Isis, such as “Queen of Heaven,” “Mother of God,” and “theotokos” (God-bearer) were attached to Mary. Mary was given an exalted role in the Christian faith, far beyond what the Bible ascribes to her, in order to attract Isis worshippers to a faith they would not otherwise embrace. Many temples to Isis were, in fact, converted into temples dedicated to Mary. The first clear hints of Catholic Mariology occur in the writings of Origen, who lived in Alexandria, Egypt, which happened to be the focal point of Isis worship.

Catholics base the belief that Mary was a perpetual virgin through Tradition. Its not strictly in the Bible, but there are hints here and there - for example, when Jesus was on the cross, Jesus told John that he was to take care of Mary because Mary had no one else to take care of her. This implies she had no children other than Jesus.
some background info: Catholics believe that the Bible came out of the Church and Tradition, not the other way around. The Bible is the teachings and Tradition Jesus left behind written down so that it would remain unchanged as much as possible through the ages. However, obviously, not everything could be written down in the Bible without making it twice as large as it is. Therefore, Catholics believe that Tradition and the Bible work with each other completely, the Bible keeping Tradition true to its roots, while Tradition completes the Bible.

The Bible does not say that Mary is the mother of James, Joses, Simon and Judas, nor does the Bible say that Mary gave birth to anybody (male or female) other than Jesus. Back in the early centuries of Christianity, they all know that Joseph was an older man, a widower with children from his first wife. These children would be considered brothers by the townspeople, to be sure. Matthew 13:55-56 does NOT say that Mary is the mother of any child other than Jesus. Neither does Mark 6:3. When Jesus was on the Cross, he gave Mary to John to care for. Jesus would not have done so if Mary had other children to take care of her in her old age. The Bible may be vague at times, but it NEVER states that Mary gave birth to any child other than Jesus.

My mom was a Jewish virgin, before she married my Catholic dad. I was christened Catholic, and will always be a small "C" catholic, although I'm now a PROTESTant catholic.
I know this is not a popular answer, but it is the true one. I think as an former RC I have a right to answer you.
I was in various religions with odd beliefs, including my first church home, as a Catholic. I thought the pope was infallible like God, because the church said so.
We also spent time in Christian Science, for example, where Mary Baker Eddy's "Keys to the Scriptures" is taken (at least) "EQUAL" to the bible...and even prefered ABOVE and BEFORE it...teaching there is heaven and no hell, directly contradicting Jesus Himself.
These churches, RC & CS included, ALL base their odd beliefs on books other than the Bible.
In the RC catechism, we "learn" that Mary remained a virgin, against all logic, and contradicting the Bible itself.
It is like the book of Mormon and the Koran not just added to the Word of God, but taken as the #1 source, and the JW's private bible "translation" that rewords Holy Scriptures to suit the views of the founder Mr Russell.
Don't hate me for rejecting other books...I am a fundamental bible believing protestant Christian. Ether God says it, or it is a mystery of life.
"Have no Gods before me" includes Russell, Mohammed, and the pope. It is OK when they confirm the words of Jesus, but I refuse to believe their contradictions.
It was the DUTY of a Jewish wife to "Go forth and multiply", obeying God's 1st comandment (before the 10 we memorize) from way back in the garden, long before Moses was conceived, let alone climbed any mountain.
God says it. I believe it. That settles it, for me. The Word of God says Jesus' birth was of a "Virgin"...but that is all we know.
Acording to surveys:
50% of everyone, even unbelievers, DO believe in virgin birth.
But, that means that 50% of everyone, even 'Believers', do NOT believe in virgin birth.
I know I believe in God, so I believe the Word of God. PERIOD!

I don't know and would like to know, but I would say it is dogma (a pope wrote it). Listen to this though in the quran it talks about mary's mother giving birth to mary. It says she was born bascily the same way Jesus was. But than I ask them if mary was born without sin what was the point? Why did she need to be born like this if Christ is not your saviour? A muslim man told me this too, showed me the verse and everything. So I believe the catholics and muslims might have some connection here.

They dont have a leg to stand on. There is no scriptural support for the Immaculate Conception of Mary or her supposed perpetual virginity James and Judas both of which were half brothers of Jesus each wrote Epistles. Note they humbly call themselves servants of Jesus Christ, because they probably did not believe in him as Lord till after his Resurrection. .
James 1:1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.
Jude 1:1 Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:
Also he had at least 2 other half brothers and 2 or more sisters .
Mark 6:3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us?
Paul also peaks of Jesus' brother James.
Galatians 1:19 But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord’s brother.
No Mary was only a virgin before & when she conceived & gave birth to Jesus .She had at least 6 other children by her husband Joseph .

its very silly when you think about it. They claim that mary remained forever a virgin, but the bible mentions that jesus did have brothers and sisters.
The catholic church refuses to accept the sexuality of women, which is why Mary is a perpetual virgin. She doesnt have sex. Sex is a sin. Sex is bad, and they do not want to talk about it. Which is why they want you to abstain from sex.
They refuse to even allow condoms. Which is stupid, because they are allowing their believers to maybe die of AIDS.

most questions of catholic doctrine can be resolved by reference to the catholic encyclopedia, which has been available on the internet since before the web existed.
in this case catholics teach that mary's virginity was perpetual because unless we assume perpetual virginity then it becomes difficult to see how several old testament prophecies can be fulfilled. (ezekiel's unopened gate is one of the most important).
on the other hand, if you assume that jesus christ was not the messiah these difficulties disappear.
[edit]
catholics usually reckon jesus' brothers and sisters to have been joseph's children by a previous marriage.

Hello, Helen:
That is entirely tradition, yet the Catholic church is the father of Christian tradition.
Jesus said: "In vain you worship me, teaching for doctrine, the traditions of man."
And, more than you realize, tenants of mythology and phylosophy have entered our churches. And that is why God sealed a Bible code to re-orient us to truths at "the end of the days." See www.abiblecod.com
Blessings and peace in Jesus, Ben Yeshua
