I was thinking about one of Harrington's books - but not sure which is the best. Any other suggestions?

Harrington's books are an excellent idea. If he doesn't have them already, just start with vol. 1. The Super System books are also good, as is anything by Sklansky.

Also, I personally love poker chips (though I have enough for a 10 player game as it is) and playing cards, especially high quality ones (Kem, Copaq, Modiano) or interesting/unique ones (there are see-through cards, glow in the dark cards and cards of all varities of colors and designs available). You can get packs of cards for anywhere from $5 to $20, depending on the quality, and chip sets from $20 to several hundred.

Two other inexpensive ideas that come to mind are the table felt and automatic shufflers. They're pretty handy, but not really necessary, and cost anywhere from $10 to $20 ($80 if you want a really high quality shuffler).

Also poker videos or DVDs are great. There are instructional videos as well as tournament videos.

Personally, I'd love a book the most, but would also be ecstatic about receiving cards or chips. The rest I could do without, but would also be happy to get.

A book will be fine, and the Dan Harrington's book are great. But if the person you offering the gift play a lot of live poker. How about a nice card guard (card protector)
