In some traditional tribes

It is practiced in some African tribes, and even can be found being done in England. The women are forced or brainwashed into going through this procedure, which usually leads to horrible debilitating infections or death.

It is done by older women of the tribe or men. The men believe that it will stop the woman from seeking pleasure elsewhere.

female circumcision is practised widely in parts of africa, and more patchily in the arabian peninsular. it is also relatively common among malaysian and indonesian muslims. (both the girls i knew who were circumcised were malaysians).

in islam it appears to be recommended but not compulsory. (the same is true of male circumcision, though male circumcision is certainly much commoner among modern muslims).

the world health organisation recognises four degrees of female circumcision with types I and IV being by far the commonest.

type I female circumcision involves removal or laceration of the clitoral hood and is physiologically identical with the commonest form of male circumcision. it is thus surprising that modern america makes the one operation illegal while the other is commonplace.

then there is also a cosmetic fashion in the west for vaginal 'sharpening' - an elective surgical process which will commonly involve various degrees of who type I female circumcision.

in islam, it's encouraged not compulsory.

It's a cleansing ritual, NOTHING to do with men or sex.

Anyway, there are some african tribes (not muslim) who practice a different kind of circumcision. I'm not a prejudice, so will not pass unnecessary judgement on others' culture.. though I admit I enjoy reading some of the funniest answers above.. LOL

In some cultures, yes they do cut off the nerve on the woman and in some cases, sew her together. It causes all sorts of harm to the woman. Notforsaking the initial pain and trauma, there is infection and ongoing residual pain for the rest of her life.

Supposedly they do it so the woman will not feel pleasure sexually and therefore will not stray from her man, having no desire.

There is such a thing, performed among some African tribes, which is called female circumcision; but, it is more like the removal of the clitoris than removal of just the foreskin. Pretty awful practice.

India, Africa, Turkey and other parts of Asia. They still practice today. Men feels women who are circumcise honors men once they get married or they feel it make the delivery babies lot easier. They are entitled to their own tradition.

It's a misnomer. For women, it's mutilation, and it's still practiced in some places in Africa and the Middle East.

Yup, mutilation of infant boys and girls happens in many primitive and barbaric places on earth. Like the US and the middle east and Africa.

See what I did there? ;)
