I would like to get some feedback from the Christian community or others who are educated on the Bible as to why I have been told by many (but not all) Christians that getting a tattoo is sinful or goes against the Bible. All opinions are welcome, and specific verse references would be greatly appreciated.

I have heard the whole your body is a temple thing, but that makes no sense to me...If I tattooed the art of Michaelangelo on my body that was used in the cathedral would that be ok? I didn't think decoration was desecrating...

I don't think it was the mutilation thing either because everyone who said something to me about it had their ears pierced....

Some believe it is because it is destroying the temple. Which is a metaphorical term for the body. As for my opinion tattoo are artwork and artwork is beautiful and can do no harm. The people who choose to percieve it otherwise shall be the reasoning behind such as statement as to call it sinful. If all mankind is sinful in nature than a tattoo is just another sin on the pile. Do what thou wilt and respect life and the life of others and you will do no wrong.

The Old Testament law commanded the Israelites, “Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD” (Leviticus 19:28). So, even though believers today are not under the Old Testament law (Romans 10:4; Galatians 3:23-25; Ephesians 2:15), the fact that there was a command against tattoos should cause us to question. The New Testament does not say anything about whether a believer should or should not get a tattoo.

The Lord be with you

Any type of mutilation to the body is a sin.
If you think about it , tatoos are a bunch of needles sticking in you and causing you to bleed.
It is considered mutilating.
Your body is important . You should treat it good. Its the only one you will ever have.
Besides what if you one day decide you dont want an ink marking on yourself any more.
Then you have to go through another painful process to have it removed.
It looks kinda dirty. But thats just my opinion.

From my understanding, people are supposed to view the body as sort of a temple. In essence, we are supposed to appreciate the body that "God" has given us by "desecrating" that gift.

Note - this my understanding. I don't agree with it. I have two tattoos and I don't see any problem with them.

There is nothing sinful about tattoos. People use the words of Paul (your body is a temple) to push their non-tattoo beliefs. But Paul is warning of the dangers of sexual promiscuity, not tattoos.

Your body is a temple of God

You should take care of it by not doing any harm towards it

many people put tatoos and multiple piercings in that category.

Never heard anything like that before. But I guess it depends on what it is of and whether it is offensive towards religion and anyone for that matter.

Basic principle: Evil is all about me... Righteousness is all about the Savior YAHOSHUA. Which side do tatoos fall on? It is an oversimplification, but often instructive.
