My bare feet on the soft carpet below feel just great. Sometimes I forget how much our feet are caged and imprisoned and don't even get to "breathe." For me the most magical moment is a summer's day when I shed the outer footware and my bare toes delight in feeling the grains of sand shift on the beach.
I am always barefoot in my apartment, although in the dead of winter here in the Northeast USA, I definitely wear boots outside. I find that when barefoot, I feel more alive and more grounded. Just walking around the apartment, my feet get to experience the cool flat surface of linoleum in kitchen and bath, the stiff cords of my throw rug, the soft texture of my carpeting. They are stimulated and at the same time give me a stronger sense of connection with the earth. Truth to tell, on occasion, I do bump a bare toe on a corner somewhere, but that's all part of being alive, and passes quickly. Better that than the pain of a too-tight shoe. Right now I am enjoying the comfort of a soft foot cushion below my desk. I also enjoy waking barefoot for meditation practice.

Generally it does, much more comfortable and relaxing. Only when people try to tell me it's dangerous, gross or even against the law to go barefoot somewhere I get stressed. Fortunately that doesn't happen too often here in the Netherlands, no 'no shoes, no shirts, no service' signs here at all & managers don't care, which is as it should be... but unfortunately in the US there are a lot of people who -mistakingly- believe it's against the law to go barefoot in public. Now stores can set their own dress code but there are NO health department regulations against bare feet, regardless of whether food is served, and insurance companies don't require or even recommend footwear for customers. Nor is it against the law to drive barefoot in any US state. And it's not dangerous or gross; feet get very tough very quickly and are fully washable. Anyone who believes any or all of the above myths, please see source so we can truly relax! :-)

No, I actually step on things and it just makes you more pissed off than you were in the first place.
Slippers are the best way to go.
Not barefoot. Gross.
