Yes, taking religion out of society can have terrible effects. Rather than a flood of water, there will be a flood of misery when one no longer has reason to live.
Bill, have you looked at suicide rates? Nordic rates are much higher than the US, and twice as high as Italy, the seat of Catholicism. Hmmmmm.....

I don't know of anyone who is trying to take away people's religions. I hate religion with every fiber of my being, but I would stand with the theists if anyone was trying to deny them their right to believe as they wish.
As for the dam thing. The Nordic countries are the most religion free in the world. Do you see everything going crazy there? There are very few people out there who need to be threatened with hell or bribed with heaven to do good and not to do bad. If you think that you would become a barbarian if you lost your belief in your imaginary friend..then by all means persist in your delusion. (29)

I don't agree with you there, Atheist that I am, taking away an institution that so many people subscribe to is the best way to start a major war or three.....the unfortunate fact is religion is ingrained in many people's psyche's and will likely remain a major determining factor for many people until such time as our species becomes extinct
btw, I'm 32

I don't really see the logic you are getting at. But I also don't believe that religion could ever be removed from society. There will always be people who believe in various religions, and as such, I would doubt that there will ever be a time when we could remove religion from society.

no, the hoover dam is a physical creation of man, it serves an important purpose, tearing it down would not only cost a lot of money, but it would kill a lot of innocent people.
getting rid of religion? religion is a 'mental condition' created by man, it's purpose is unimportant, it wouldn't cost a penny to 'get rid of' and it wouldn't kill anyone by doing so.

No I don't think you can compare the two.
Religion is a way a life when that is taken away you might not have the strength to rebuild.
Soceity will always find the means to build another dam
So I believe you can not compare the two!

I am Atheist; without religion I wouldn't be Atheist.
Religion cannot be taken away as it is just one of those things...without religion people would just have faith in something else.
