I had a job interview on Friday 7th Dec. I thought it went really well. I was told I'd hopefully find out if I got it by the end of the following week - which I assumed would be last Thursday or Friday. I still haven't heard anything. Be honest - at this stage should I just assume I'm awaiting a rejection letter?

I didn't get the job. I went out to buy a sandwich for lunch there and the woman who interviewed me - my would-be boss walked in. I made polite conversation with her but she didn't mention the job. I think that says it all!

Not necessarily. It could be that any references are being checked, two candidates with similar scores etc.
Christmas is a time when parties are held in business circles and minds are focused in other directions.
Wait and see!

Sometimes it just takes a little longer, they might have last min interviews to do or something big is happening and they put that off for a few days. Never assume you didn't get it. What you can do is call and do a follow up. Good Luck!

After any interview for a job I would like to get, I always send a follow up letter. To thank the interviewer and establishment for their time. Also to reiterate my interest and drive to be an employee of their company. I know that does not answer your question. But it is a nice way to refresh the interviewers mind of your interest. Also lets them know you are on the ball and always keeping your eye on your goal. Good Luck !!!

A lot of times in management they await for you to callback due in part to see if your heart is in the position you applied for. It shows that you are passionate & care that you want this job. Also too it might be a close contest by later interview. You need to call in this scenario as well because he will put the memory of you in the forefront of the other potential hire.
By all means, GOOD LUCK!!

For some companies it can takes weeks even up to a month or longer to reply back to you with a job offer or rejection. It depends on how big the company is, and how fast they need to fill the position. But you really need to follow up with them, and more then once.

Why not give them a ring, they may have had to extend the interview period as they had more people to interview than expected, i did this with my last interview and got the job, i must have seemed keen (or desperate).

Not necessarily, they did say "hopefully". Perhaps they still haven't decided, perhaps their letter is snarled up in the Christmas post. Try giving them a ring

No - there could be many reasons for the delay. Remain hopeful but start looking at other job possibilities anyway while you are waiting for the outcome.

In my opinion the best thing you should do, call them. Make sure everything went well, if not, ask what the reason was so you could work on it for later.
