This message says, "Updating your computer is almost complete. Your computer needs to be restarted for the updates to take effect. Windows will restart your computer automatically in 1:29 minutes. Do you want to restart your computer now?" Choices: "Restart Now" and "Restart Later."

If I hadn't just pressed the latter, I wouldn't have even gotten to finish posting this question. About 10 minutes or so from now, that moronic message will come up again. If I'm in bed by then, I'll wake up in the morning to a rebooted computer! Whether or not I'd still been online. There really NEEDS to be a *third* choice that says: "NO!! Don't you DARE restart my computer without my express permission, and don't you dare ever present me with this message again. EVER!." (Unfortunately, there isn't such an option available.)

HOW in the world do I get Windows to STOP doing this unwanted **crap** to my computer?!?

Or is my only recourse to SCRAP Windows, tell Microsoft where to go, and buy a Mac?

To "chezzrob" and "whyme" -- WOW!! How absolutely EASY! Got it done in virtually NO time! I selected the option that lets them notify me of updates, but allows me to choose the time to access them. THANKS!

To the others who also offered assistance with this -- Thank You! Those methods probably would have worked, too, and your help is much appreciated!

If it's windows XP:

Right click on "my computer" icon.
Click on "Properties".
Click on the tab called "AUTOMATIC UPDATES".
Check the circle that says "Turn off automatic updates".
Click "OK".

That's easy and it's done!

Unfortunately I personally can't give you a solution without some testing on this. Usually a restart in my experience is because 1 of 2 things. 1.) A system error (bsod) and you haven't disabled the "automatic restart on system failure" option (to do so, right cick "My COmputer" select "properties" click the "advanced" tab, under "startup/recovery" click the "Settings" button. There, UNcheck "automatically restart". Click "apply" and "ok" buttons). 2.) Overheating. Please try #1 first and see if that at least gets you a Blue Screen with an error message so someone else can better assist you after posting the error message.

If none of the above works go to internet opinions then click on settings.
Then click on the never automatic update button, then click on ok button.
You might also want to delete all cookies while in internet opinions as well as all temp. files to speed your computer up.
