There are places you can take your dogs, hotels etc... search on the internet to find them. Dont forget that UK is a lot colder than the mediterranean climate and so do not have restaurants with seating outside where you are welcome with your dog. And the health and safety regulations are very strict. We love our dogs, but you just have to know where you can go to take them with you. Search the net next time you travel.

I think the problem is they are regarded as 'dirty', as any animal would be, and are not welcome in a public enclosed space where some people might not like it. Most people are fine, but some people don't like dogs, or may be allergic or scared of dogs so to avoid any hostility they just say 'no dogs allowed.'
The truth is I don't think there is a law against dogs going into normal shops or pubs. They are not allowed in food shops or restaurants due to hygiene. But any other shop that says 'no dogs' actually has no right to enforce it.
Guide dogs are allowed anywhere.
Personally I wouldn't care if people took their dogs into shops everywhere they went. However over time I guess it would make the place dirtier- pet hair would accumulate, the floor would get greasy, and the truth is that many people do not have dogs as calm and house-trained as you. Many dogs despite being housetrained 'mark' everywhere they go, and others are happy to go for a poo inside as well! Some dogs jump up and bark, and that wouldn't make for a pleasant atmosphere in a shop.
I suppose britain is more strict about dogs because here, along with the US we have more dogs and more pedigrees- they are more fashionable and are kept more as pets. In some countries dogs are working dogs, and are usually humble and well behaved. But over here the are millions of dogs, many of which are like fashion accessories, big powerful and badly trained.

Ummm...OK I don't mean this aggressively. Dogs are dogs. Not people. And not everyone likes them. They shouldn't be in restaurants, or the shops. In Australia you can take them to parks, and some beaches. But never in a restaurant or shop. And most hotels likewise - if you didn't like animals would you want to sleep in a room that had had pets in it? There are special dog hotels here.

Generally people in Australia, and I'm sure in GB, spend time with their dog at home and when they go for walks. When they go out the dog is in the backyard, or in a safe area inside. It's great you love your dog so much but don't forget she is a dog and doesn't need to be carried everywhere.

Hi, i live in prague, so i know EXACTLY what you mean. dogs are welcome EVERYWHERE here.
I'm from GB, so when I am there with my dog, he has to stay at home with my mother.
The reason being is that laws in UK are very strict in regards to health and safety. People are so concerned about "germs". The amount of noise and muck children make, theyre not allowed either everywhere!!! lol
If you decide to go to england again, http://www.hotels.uk.com/pets/
that might help!
I'm so sorry you had a bad time in my country :-( its just the way england is. and even though i love my dog, britain wouldnt be britain if we didnt have these laws.
My dogs a pomeranian, so hes tiny and can sit inside a bag, but i wouldnt like a big labrador drooling over my dinner in restaurants back home. Europe is just crazy, the dont wear safety gear on a scaffold, that just says it all. lol

You can take dogs on trains and the London underground and you can also take them on public transport.

You can't take them in Restaurants or food shops due to hygiene laws.

In stores it is up to the individual store but as people were abusing the privilege and allowing dogs to soil merchandise it is rare to find a store that will allow any pets. (A damp Labrador brushing a against a rack of dresses can make the garments unfit for sale)
Our health & safety rules can also make the business liable if another customer trips over your dog!

Many hotels allow dogs but you do have to check with the hotel in advance. I've stayed in many hotels with my dogs when attending shows but they stay in the room while I have meals.

My dogs, even my Borzoi, have lightweight fabric travel crates which fold flat & the dog is fastened in his/her "bed" with a treat whenever I have to leave the hotel room. This is for the dog's safety as much as for the hotel.

PUPPY LOVE. Are you saying that you have been instructed NOT to were safety gear on scaffolding.
Some people (that includes most in Europe) want to feel free and not to be dictated to by rules all the time.
In UK we complain all the time about PC and the Govt. telling us how to run our lives, yet we then hold it up to the rest of the world as a good thing. Dogs are not a health risk or the Govt. would have banned us from having them especially if we have children. Our obsession with anti bacterial cleaner has led to our children being plagued by allergies.
We actually need to be exposed to germs in order to survive.
Think of how people lived before from caveman times and how many of us there are today.
As a positive thank you for the excellent link I'm sure it will comes in handy if the questioner come back here.
However, as you have found out, this is the last country I would take to spend time in if I did not live here and had a dog.
To the Australian answer. you are a zillion miles from anywhere. In Europe we travel to different countries all the time.
In fact I go to France just to do my monthly shopping. So,we tend to take our family with us and that includes my dog. Most English people that travel will know what I'm talking about.

I've had several dogs and used to get upset with the restrictions especially on beaches. However, it's that there are more irresponsible owners than ill behaved dogs so that's why they have been disallowed in places. In the the UK we try to have better hygiene and dogs make it difficult due to their obvious toilet actions so banning them from areas is the only answer. In a way it's a bit similar to banning smoking as it's a step towards a cleaner environment...at least inside buildings.

As already stated, it is mainly due to our Health and Safety laws, plus the fact that London has a large population of ethnics who are terrified of dogs. I have a dog and have to put up with constant high pitched screaming (and running)of children of ethnic origin because the parents have instilled their own fear of dogs into their children (eg. "all dogs have rabies" and must not be touched before visiting a mosque etc) I could go on all day!! Also a lot of irresponsible dog owners (English) do not clear up after their dogs, and have probably never heard of Toxicaria, or if they have, deliberately ignore it.

Some bars and pubs will allow dogs in, but that's about all. Most places are dog free. Busses do take dogs, but you have to pay for them. Some taxi's will if they stay off the seat.

You could try and find someone to day board for you while you visit a few places. That's about your only option apart to sticking to visiting parks etc where of course dogs are welcome.

Your dog might be OK and well behaved , but all dogs aren't. Stores etc dont want dogs peeing and pooing on their merchandise. ..Similarly a health hazard in restaurants etc,,, No sorry you cannot take dogs to these sort of places,, A lot of pubs allow pets, It is a matter of being sensible..
