It's not the taste, it's the effect. FYI, not all people feel that spirits containing alcohol are bad in taste. I happen to prefer to drink beer with dinner rather than water or pop. Just my preference...Doesn't make me an alcoholic.

Like other said its not the taste of the alcohol. It's the alcohol it self and some people become addicted to that. I was told that by a doctor when asked the same kind of question. It also is the after effect of drinking that some people become addicted to and they think it makes their problems better and makes everything go away when it doesn't.

Pure alcohol might taste repulsive, I did try some of that pure grain alcohol stuff one time, and it was repulsive, but many alcoholic drinks are very tasty. Certainly wine is one of the best tasting drinks in the world. Wine contains so many flavour compounds to create complex taste and aroma profiles that no other beverage on earth can compare to. I know young kids like thier sweet drinks full of chemicals and factory made sweetners, but when you grow up you might find that the complex flavours in fine wine are very satisfying.
Not to mention a well made scotch, how the smoky peat flavours and vaninils from the long exposure to oak barrells make them taste to complex and interesting.
Repulsive? I find the taste of corn sweetners repulsive, but addiction to sweetned carbonated beverages is probably far more common than to alcohol in the world, and likely the cause of nearly as much health issues, such as obesity, cancers, diabeties, etc...

The taste isn't repulsive to a lot of people, and is a developed taste. Beer, wine and Scotch taste pretty good to me. Most alcoholics like the taste. They have a disease that causes the addictive reaction.

If you think alcohol tastes repulsive, then you need to:
1. Learn how to make your drinks correctly or
2. Experiment with different drinks to find one that you think is tasty or
3. Fire your bartender.
There are plenty of drinks out there that taste great and it is up to you to find them. Trial and error.
People get addicted to the way alcohol makes them feel.
For others, they drink to make YOU more interesting.
Good times!!!

Because alcohol gives the user a euphoric effect between BAC of 0.03 to 0.12%, causing the user to become addicted in much the same way as one becomes to opioids. Taste has nothing to do with addiction, despite the fact that there's nothing like a shot of 151 in the morning to get you ready for the day.

It is not the taste, friend. It is the effect on mind(brain) and body which makes a drinker feel so much excited that he becomes addicted to it.

alcohol causes a physical addiction to the chemical not to the taste. Some people are more prone to addiciton because of genetics too.

I have to agree with the other person... it's not the taste that they become addicted to. & it depends on what you're talking about as to if it tastes good or not.
