If we could somehow "buy" our way into God's good graces, then Jesus died for nothing. The false doctrine of "indulgences" is a lie from Satan, since it corrupts the Gospel. So yes, I agree with the preacher (although Satan isn't in Hell ... yet).

I think they should explain what they mean instead of giving you figurative speech, it can mean so MANY things depending on your personal perspective.

What kind of indulgences?

Saying "NO," to someone asking you to volunteer in the office's party committee, so that you could indulge yourself to a couple of quiet evenings with your family? That' not evil. It's not a lie, whether you were available or not to volunteer, it's not the point.

Some things are good to indulge yourself in like; more time with family, personal sane days (days you take off work for no reason except to mentally regroup), extra vacation days, fancy dinner for a special occassion - I think those things are necessary for your mind, body and spirit!

You should ask this preacher what he meant, it sounds like he's preaching an overgeneralized and extremely vague comment that's unclear. It sounds very old, very unforgiving, fearful, and not quite a welcoming message...I can't picture Christ talking this way. He'd actually give you a parable at least so you'd have an example of what he meant when he preached something that was unclear.

Absolutely! It is a money-making sceme for the Catholic church. Saint Peter's Cathedral was funded by poor suckers who were duped into thinking that they could pay their way to into heaven while sinning all the more because they were supposedly forgiven if they paid their indulgences. Nowhere in the Bible do you find that people can buy forgiveness.

One of the tools that Satan has is temptation beyond need. That is not to say you can not enjoy the life God has for you but over indulgence can lead you astray.

Matthew 23:25
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.

Colossians 2:23
Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

Ecclesiastes 7:4
The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.

It is simply a means of fleecing the flock for as much as they can using fear and guilt tactics. I thought the practice of selling 'Indulgences' in the papist's church was done away in Vatican II. However, and regardless if that is right, you are granted "Indulgences" by joining in particular pigrimages or signing on as supporters of particular programs of the papist churches, from what I understand today. Alan Campbell, a minister in Belfast Ireland has some tapes where he touches on the subject and presents literature fromt he Papist sources which are saying just that. www.1335.com

Simony is "from the pit of hell", the selling of sacred things . The concept that one can get" next life fire insurance" without repentance of sin as we see in many OSAS(Once Saved Always saved )typesof avoidance of conversion of life.

The preacher has not read the Catechism on indulgences wh since indulgences are focused on grace and the deathof christ and His merits.

I think it clearly makes no sense and also there is no reason to pay heed to a preacher that preaches of things not in the bible ie hell. So don't worry about it too much.

Well, lets face it, they have to try to keep their talons in you don't they? Well, Don't they? Mmm, see what I mean? I sat down with 2 priests & chatted about the powers of darkness, They asked if I had questions. I said: I have an observation & a Question, but I don't need the answer, you do!.

My observation: that we had been sitting, talking about the powers of darkness for 2 hours, the question: What colour clothes are you wearing? Do you see the point? Iv'e often observed, that one of the best places to hide something, is where everyone can see it!
