In life if you have no aspirations or "dreams", what do you have to look forward to down the road in life? If nothing is there for you to reach for on the horizon, there is no greater purpose for you in life. Kofi Annan is explaining this significant meaning by using dreams as the objective the mind craves to survive. It could be anything to different people. It could simply be saving enough money for a sports car, finally going on a dream vacation, or in a more expanded sense, making a difference in the world.

It means no matter what happens, you focus on achieving that goal in your life. You can dream something material, like a brand new flat and car or you can dream something more intangible.
In the end, it is the dream which makes you take actions that you do now and later to get to that dreams of yours. It is like your guiding light, similar to sailors who rely heavily on the north star to guide their way.

just replace the word dream in the quote and fill it up with the word goal....then you would definitely understand the quote...since no man had achieved without a goal set up ahead...i think the word dream was chosen because... to set up a goal...dreams would be helpful...afterall...every inventions are someone's dream...unless and until you dream of achieving a goal you would land at no man's land.....

well, dream is like a vision/mission/goal/motives/direction of where you heading.
without a point for you to head somewhere, you'll be stagnant on your own point and will forever go nowhere. :)
so, with a dream..it'll bring you somewhere: at least you have a direction. :)

you have to have an ambition in your life.. it is even proven that people that have a goal in life achieve better results because they know where they are heading.
