All I know is you play as some soldier dude with a beard and do covert ops stuff. I've seen the trailer for the 4th game and there is a dude that stabs himself to kill some other guy and I'm like what the hell is going on? And theres some robot thing jumpin around like a fruit cake for no reason. Very confusing. I'm a Halo guy.

You should definitely play the MGS series. I dont think there i s any game out there with stronger story line than this game. It'll feel like watching a movie most of the time, but the gameplay is awesome. The game's main theme is to prevent terrorists cells who have mutant-like abilities from using the most advanced nuclear warhead system (Metal Gear) to destroy the world. I see that you are a Halo fan so I should note that this is not a run and shoot game. There is a lot stealth and sneaking in this game, which may seem a little boring if your used to running around teabagging everybody (lol..memories). The boss battles are pretty intense though. MGS4 is supposed to take place several years after MGS2, so you may want play that one to be up to date. MGS 3 was the best, but was like flashback for the series to give more detail on Big Boss, which I'm guessing the story is to come full circle in MGS4. Like any story jumping in on the last act will leave a lot questions.

I would just for the hell of it. If you are then you might as well buy the game cube to cope with the graphics. the first metal gear solid game is pretty hard on the eyes.
MSG games all involve history of the before games. So i def. if you have the money.
You should borrow it from a friend or rent it (if that's possible)

YES. theres no point playing MGS4 without starting from the beginning(but skip the gameboy/nintendo though :D)
but if you dont have so much time playing MGS1,2 ,3 try visiting wikipedia or a walkthrough guide to read about the story..
for me the story is much more important than the game itself.

if u like to every MGS series has a story for example
in MGS 3 u take the mission in russia to save a rocket doctor named socolove from a guy called colonel volgin from creating the ultimate nuclear weapon that can wipe the unverse its a tank with 100% armor around it and nothing can destroy it and has 2 giant boosters and has the strongest nuclear missle and its called shagohod the object of the mission is to rescue that doctor and the mother of war and they call her the boss was sent there to regain the philosefers legecy but something goes wrong volgin destroys the lab and to proof americas loyalty she must die someone must kill her and while playing u meet many other things such as the cobra unit i really sugest u buy them i played every MGS series
