In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul pretty much defines what biblical love is. But he says, 'If I have tongues of men and of angels', Here is my question. What is tongues of angels? Been wondering that. My favorite preacher doesn't even know what it means. Help?

Tongues are languages plain and simple.

Speaking in an unknown tongue, as the Bible describes in Mark chapter 16 and Acts chapters 2, 8, 10 and 19 means speaking in a language the speaker has not learned thru education.

It might be the langage understood by men or it might be a language which no man on earth understands so Paul referred to those as the tongues of angels.

Missionaries have reported that when poeple overseas are Baptized in the Holy Spirit just like the Apostles were, sometimes their "unknown tongue", remember that is a language unknown to them, turns out to be English.

If you have more questions feel free to ask, God graciously gave me this gift when I was still in high school.

In 1 Corinthians 13:1, Paul is not indicating that some Christians speak an “angelic” (ecstatic) language. Rather, he is merely saying that even if one could ascend to a new height, and communicate on the level of angels, if he did not exercise love by speaking in an understandable fashion, he still would be nothing but a distracting noise. The apostle’s argument does not hint of a mysterious, unintelligible utterance; in fact, it reflects just the opposite.

Reading chapters 12 and 14 are instructive, as there he is speaking of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, including the gift of "speaking in tongues". Chapter 14, particularly, mentions the value of speaking in tongues which cannot be understood. This is, as correctly identified by several answers, "language", not merely the intent of the speaker, as suggested by some answers. We humans do not know the language of angels, nor can we identify it, since it is only spoken through humans by the Holy Spirit. I suspect that even interpreters of tongues (required when a speaker of tongues is speaking in an unknown language) cannot recognize if the language spoken is "of angels" or "of men."

Paul does not speak in tongues of angels. The point is LOVE you can have all these thing but what are they without LOVE, you have nothing at all. With out love none of thing are worth anything even if he could speak in tongues of angels.

1 Corinthians 13

1If I speak in the tongues[a] of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,[b] but have not love, I gain nothing.

Angels are often the messengers for God. So if you substitute that idea, maybe it will help shed some light.

To me, it is about intention - what's going on inside me. If I am not moving from my 'heartspace' and approaching all I do (which includes my speech) from the point of unconditional love, then even if I am repeating what the messengers of God have said, it means nothing. In fact it can actually grate on someone else's nerves.
Or see if this inspires something in your fav preacher.
Blessings for an interesting Q. Thx !

Well you know tongue always refers to like the words that come out and how they speak. So it's a safe bet to say that the voices/languages of men and angels is what it's talking about.

:) Hi. You know what? It's so nice to know that your favourite pastor doesn't know the answer to this question of yours! Why? Because I know of a preacher who already taught us this!

And he told us that there are SO MANY preachers in the world who are preaching and yet doesn't know this one mystery in the scriptures.

Not all can understand the mysteries of the kingdom of God in the bible, more so the false preachers and pastors.

Isaiah 56:11

"Yes, they are greedy dogs
Which never have enough.
And they are shepherds
Who cannot understand;
They all look to their own way,
Every one for his own gain,
From his own territory."

Knowledge of the mysteries of the Kingdom of God is GIVEN by God to his children:

Mark 4:11

"And He said to them, “To you it has been given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to those who are outside, all things come in parables,..."

You have a nice question. That's a sign of a keen reader. This question has been taught to us by our pastor perhaps 2 or 3 years ago already.

Topic: "Language of the Angels".

This is one of the statements of Apostle Paul who is known to write things which are hard to understand.

2 Peter 3:15-16

" and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. "

I would give you an insight on what that means...

Let's read 1 Corinthians 13:1

"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal."

If you noticed, 'TONGUES OF MEN' implies PLURALITY. Meaning more than one.

While 'OF ANGELS' might mean 'SINGULAR'. Meaning just one.

There's TOUNGE/LANGUAGE of Angels.

Got it, so far?

Do angles have this language even before men who created?

Will we know this language in the future?

Does Paul know this already?

:)

Those are valid questions that can open your mind on many things.

You may know the answer to this question but I'd prefer that our preacher, Bro. Eli Soriano, explain this to you so it'd be SO CLEAR to you.

Please visit his BLOG site and drop him a question. He's THE ONLY preacher in our country that ANSWERS QUESTIONS SPONTANEOUSLY, LIVE on TV or radio, internet, etc. I'm not even sure if he's the only one who does that in the entire world today.

Our church's website is:

www.angdatingdaan.org that recently won the prestigous country's 10th Philippine Web Award's MOST POPULAR WEBSITE OF THE YEAR.

God bless.

Tongues refers to the ability to communicate---like use the language of the angels to speak. Love is made up of a lot of things--even in real life--and communications is one of the biggest parts of love. Paul would be happy to be able to speak to all people in their native language. That would be the "gift of tongues"--referred to in the bible.

I once thought it to be a rhetorical statement. Since then, I have decided differently.

Now, I think that it is what it is. He is referring to the language that angels use. Unfortunately for us, there is not to my research any passage that helps define what that is. If anyone finds out, pass it on to me.

Don't loose sight of the context. All we can say is noise if what we do is without love behind it.

Grace and peace to all.

tongues usually means language, in a metaphorical sense the language of angels. Look at the story before and then look back at it.
