I've had a bump under my armpit for about 3 months now. It turns from flesh color, to red every now and again and has increasingly started to hurt as time goes by. Today I discovered that the top of the bump, on the surface of my skin is squishy and EXTREAMLY sore to touch and for me to move my arm. The bump under the skin has grown and hurts increasingly more than it has before.
I've gone to the doctors and everytime they say come back if it gets worse. Any suggestions as to what it may be?

Often a lump that is right below the skin is an infection that is trying to make it's way to the surface. You mentioned that the top is "squishy" so it sounds like it may be finally reaching the surface so the infection can come out. When it finally does the pain will be relieved. Possible problem: The bacteria MRSA sometimes presents itself just as you are describing. Once it starts draining your doctor can culture a small amount of the pus to find out if it is MRSA. This test takes 3-4 days. If it is MRSA, It will open up but will not heal easily unless you are on certain antibiotics. Since MRSA has become so prevalent lately, I would be concerned and make sure that I voice those concerns with my doctor. (M) Methacillin (R) Resistant (S) Staphylococcus (A) Aurias can be extremely dangerous if left untreated and it is somewhat contagious. Bottom line: Once it comes to a head and it heals quickly then everything will be O.K. but if it comes to a head and does not heal, then see your doctor ASAP.

Could be anything from a subcutaneous infection to cancer.

Please, see a different doctor, maybe even a dermatologist. And if they tell you to come back if it gets worse, insist that it already IS worse. Take a notepad, and ask them to give a medical diagnosis of what is is, so you can go to the library or internet to find out more about it.

You need to see a DIFFERENT doctor. In the meantime try to keep it clean and dry. Dont pick or squeeze. Make a Dr. appt.
